Solely Pumping - Product Help

For many reasons, I'd like to solely pump breast milk and bottle-feed my breast milk to the little one to come. This being said, I would like to find the highest-rated pump and supplies I can find to register for.?

Because the internet is so full of opinions and it's hard to tell what is biased and what is not, I'm asking HERE, as I know it's a lot of REAL MOMS, - what pump do you suggest, and what accessories do I need to accompany the pump itself in order to make things easier and be sure to have all necessary supplies when she arrives?

Thanks in advance. If I don't wrap up my registry this week I'm going to go crazy! :)

  • I have a PISA- it came with bottles but I did need to buy new horns- the standard size was too small.  I also use the microwave sterlizer bags at work and the Lansinoh storage bags.  We use the Playtex drop-ins to feed- he wasn't a fan of the nipples on the Medela bottles.

Good luck!  EPing is a big commitment- kudos to you for ensuring your LO gets BM in a way that works for you!

Thanks so much for your helpful response! I'm pretty sure, like everything else, it will just end up being a personal preference matter for myself with the pump and for the baby with the bottles and nipples, but it can't hurt to get some honest opinions from real people!

  • i also have a PISA, I love it. Register for an extra set of pump parts so you're not washing so much. I use lanisoh storage bags. GL momma!

Yes, x1000!  I keep a set at home and a set at work.  I only had one set when I first started back to work and forgot them at home one day.  It was a very, very bad day.

  • I would rent or buy a hospital grade pump--I have the Medela Lactina.  Also, the Medela quick clean steam  bags are good to have.

  • I have the Medela pump in style. When I went back to work at 3 months, I am "forced" to pump for much of the day. He is 5 months today and we're doing great. It is a HUGE commitment, so great job on making that first step. If you ever get discouraged (which I have numerous times) keep thinking of the great thing you are doing for your baby.  I have found recently that my supply dropped...pumping is not as efficient as nursing, so you may find that your supply will drop too as you go along. In order to try to produce more, I try to nurse him as soon as I get home from work and on weekends, so my supply is going back up now....just thought I'd pass along that "tip" in case it happens to you.

You may want to get a hands free pumping bra too.  Medela makes them. I pump and drive and use my cover up.  LIFE SAVER!

  • I've been exclusively pumping pretty much since day one because we're having latch problems and nipple issues.  I have a PISA and I really like it.  If you are producing enough, my LC told me there's no need to get a hospital grade pump.  But you could try it out for the first few weeks to help establish your supply.  You need to be pretty religious about pumping and it can become frustrating.  There are days I cry because I feel chained to the pump.

We use the Playtex Drop-ins and I bought a kit from Amazon (I have seen it in Target too) that lets you pump right into the liners.  This has been really helpful for me.  I also freeze some milk in the liners too, and then store them in freezer ziploc bags.

I second getting additional parts so you don't have to constantly wash them, but I also re-use mine for 24 hours before washing them.  I just put them in the fridge in a container and they're fine to reuse.  And make sure you get the right size flanges as the ones that come with the pump don't fit everyone.  I had to get larger ones.  And I also use the steamer bags.

    GL!

  • I could not feed my baby from the breast so I rented a hospital grade Medela Symphony, which is a double electric pump. It is also very quiet. I would also recommend a hands-free pumping bra as it is a huge amount of work to pump for a newborn and feed them at the same time. The Symphony is quite nice and I think a great option if you plan to exclusively express for the entire time (rather than as a temporary solution)

    Good luck!
