Can I Freeze Gallons of Milk?

We have a new freezer in the basement, and the one thing I would love to be able to freeze but am not sure I can is milk.  We go through quite a bit, and I would love to not run to the store constantly to buy it.  I often buy 2 or 3 gallons at a time, but it takes up a large portion of our small fridge.  So, can I stock up and toss them in the freezer?

Re: Can I Freeze Gallons of Milk?

  • You can.  My neighbor told me she used to do that.  She had 4 kids in 5 years.

  • yup I do it all the time also..

Does the milk get a weird texture after you freeze it?

I accidentally had milk freeze once, when it thawed it was weird (I tossed it). So I haven't tried since.

  • I've never tried to freeze milk in the freezer, but we accidentally left a jug in our trunk after grocery shopping last winter and it froze solid (it can get to near -40 C here)  Once it thawed it had a really funky taste & texture, so we threw it out.  I don't know if a freezer would affect it in the same way, but it was gross.
  • You can but you need to make sure there is enough room in the container for expansion. Also, it takes forever for a gallon of frozen milk to thaw. Personally I find freezing milk to be a major PITA, so I just plan on going to Costo every week.

  • The proteins will destabilize and change the flavor and consistency of the thawed milk but its still consumable and nutricious in this state. You may not like the flavor poured on your cereal though.

  • We freeze ours all the time.  When we are getting low, we put it on the counter to thaw overnight and it is ready in the morning.  We drink fat-free and it has never altered the taste and texture.  Maybe freezing alters the taste and texture of milk with a little fat in it.
