PSA: Foam puzzle mats deemed not safe in France (LIP)

I am super bummed, because I just got one of these as a shower gift, and I was very much looking forward to putting it in the baby's room. Apparently, ALL foam puzzle mats are being removed from childcare/daycares and taken off store shelves due to formamide levels: bascially, your baby could potentially be crawling on and chewing on a form of formaldihyde.

It looks like France does not have a brand specific ban yet, so that means all of them are bad until some are proven good... Here is the link to the article, with a further link to the French newscast (in French, of course.)

Thought I should share! I will post on nursery and baby gear board, too.

  • Oh man, I hope they figure this out. I love those things! But of course not if they are unsafe.

  • But are they the same ones that are being sold here in the US? I didn't read the article ...

It didn't say which ones yet...just talked about foam mats in general.
  • I ran to Ross today for something (don't know if you have one but it's like TJ Maxx, Marshall's, etc.) and they had TONS of the foam puzzle mats for sale.  And they were cheap.  Perhaps the larger department stores and dumping them off in preparation for a ban?

  • I had a feeling about these, one reason I never bought anything foam for DS. Thanks for sharing. I will be passing this on.
