Pregnant after a Loss

Got my doppler...freaking out

Even though I told myself that I might not be able to find the heartbeat with the doppler and that was ok because it is early, when I tried my sonoline b for the first time a few minutes ago and couldn't find it, I freaked a little.

Then of course I start smooshing my boobs...they don't hurt so much anymore.

And oh wait, I'm not so nauseous today.

Commence full on freak out.

Anyone have any tips for using my doppler so I can get some peace of mind? We  kept getting125-135 in certain spots but I really think it was me and my HB was fast because of nerves.

  • I am scared to get a doppler for that exact reason. I hope you figure it out soon and can calm your nerves. :)

  • You're still really early.

Lay as flat and still as possible. Try using it extremely low. At first I found it below my pubic hairline.

It can also totally depend on where the baby is and where your placenta is, so try not to worry so much. I also had better luck with a full bladder early on.

All this, plus use lots of the gel/lube stuff, cause it's much harder to pick up if you don't use enough.

  • Don't freak out.  I couldn't hear the hb with my doppler until i was 12 weeks, and even then was hit and miss.  I would try for so long that I actually bruised myself from pushing.  I would try again in a few days.  Baby is still very small.

  • Lady, why are using a home doppler at 10 weeks? That is just asking for it.

My OB wouldn't even attempt in his office until 12, and even then, told me a thousand times that there was a good chance he wouldn't be able to find it and not to panic.

I wasn't able to find her consistently until about two weeks ago. And even then, it's for three seconds because she scoots and rolls to get away from it.

If you are set on using it this early, a full bladder and looking REALLY low (we're talking pubic area low) are your best bets. But I would really suggest putting it away for right now, go in to your OB if you need a peace of mind check, and bring it out in four weeks or so when you have a much better chance (and even then, you are going to have times where you just can't find it.)

  • yeah don't worry I am sure all is well. You have to go as low as your hair line. I still have a hard time finding LO. It moves around a lot!

  • you are super early. and I promise your heart rate is not 120 unless you are on a treadmill while using the doppler.

I agree with all pp. go WAY low. use gel or aloe, plenty of it. and then still, you are still early.

(and PS: around 11/12 weeks many of my symptoms disappeared or lessened).

m/c#1 07/16/08 (11 weeks), m/c#2 10/10/08 (8 weeks). and then nothing since except every test possible (no answers). IUI#1 and #2: BFNs Super lucky to be buddies with Peetie. Our out of nowhere, surprise DD born 5/29/2011
  • I know, I was asking for it. It was a combination of my symptoms lessening and not having my weekly ultrasounds that I was having at the RE that prompted me to do it. DH and I are going to try again tonight and then put it away. Only 4 more days until the NT scan....I'm just going to tough it out. Thanks for talking me off the ledge ladies.

  • Laying on the floor vs my comfy mattress made a difference early on, so make sure you are on a really flat surface.  Here are some more tips, but like everyone else said, it's still early.  I am sure baby is just fine and wiggling away in there!

  • You are early, but some people have been able to pick up the heartbeat that early.  Here are some tips I found that worked: use plenty of gel, be slow in your movements, try holding the wand at different angles in the same place.  Remember how teeny tiny the heart is, and the machine has to be at just the right place to pick it up.  It's definitely a challenge.  Be patient.  Last week, twice, it took me a while to find the heartbeat, and I've been able to find it for quite some time now.  Also, for me, I like to lay on my bed without any other sounds and I lock the dog out, so he can't jump around on the bed.  It's a really precious time when you do find the heartbeat, so you don't want any distractions from that moment.

  • I *think* I heard the HB. It was only for 3 seconds and then a woosh but I am 99% positive it was my Love Bug. The boom boom was way faster than mine. I tried for 20 minutes after that to get it again but no luck. At least I feel better about it now. No more doppler for a little while for me.

  • I also have the Sonoline B and it took me a little while to figure it out.  First, use a ton of the goo.  Also, start out low and work your way across and then move up.  Your heartbeat will be slow and loud.  The baby will be found when you start to hear the wooshing sound of your uterus.  When you hear that, just stay focused in that area and push down with the wand (and maybe add some more goo).  It will not be loud (so turn the volume all the way up) and it will be very fast.  Once you get it a few times, it will get easier to use.
