Hey, have you tried probiotics for your kiddo? When Ben was on augmentin, he'd get horrible diarrhea if we didn't give him mega-doses of probiotics. On probiotics, however, he had normal poop. Let me know if you want to know how we dosed him. It takes a while to type out!
Re: amstep
I am an idiot! Thank you for posting this. I actually have culturelle in the fridge, left over from his last EI a month ago!
What do you use, though. Is your system better? I usually just dissolve one capsule into some cold yogurt or pudding (if he's being feisty, the pudding goes down better).
Thank you thank you! Poor guy. Mommy needs to get with it!
No, you're not an idiot. Just a tired mom with two little (one sick, even) ones!
Culturelle is a pretty good probiotic (so long as it's the adult version; I don't think the kid's one has nearly enough live active cultures to deal with "augmenin tummy"). The one I take daily (for my UC) has 12 billion live active cultures per pill, and has 8 (or more, maybe) different strains of probitics in it. Culturelle just has one strain and 10 billion live active cultures. So it's pretty comparable in terms of number of live active cultures, but it doesn't have the variety.
Anyway, when Ben was on augmentin, we'd give him one pill two times a day, sprinkled in some sort of cool food like yogurt or applesauce, or in a bottle when he was littler. The trick is to make sure that you're giving it at least two hours away from the augmentin, or you'll immediately kill off all the probiotics. So Ben would get his agumentin with breakfast and supper, and his probiotic at lunch and bedtime snack.
His pedi was completely ok with that, and said we could give him more if we needed to, to get the diarrhea under control
Thanks! What kind do you use and where do you get it?
Ours is the adult culturelle, so that's good. But I might try yours after we finish this up!
