Offensive flu shot ad in OB office???

I live in Maryland and all over the OB office and the hospital they have these "advertisements" for pregnant women encouraging us to get our flu shot.  My issue is that the "girl" in the picture looks no older than 14 or 15 years old.  She is unnaturally thin with a "perfect" basketball bump.  She is wearing clothes (a green skirt with matching jacket) that clearly came from a designer boutique, perfect hair, perfect make-up and HIGH-heel boots that go up to her knee (we're talking like 5 inches).  Oh, and a cutsey little handbag.  I hate this add.  When was the last time any of you could wear 5 inch heels?  I almost died the other day when I wore 2 inch heels for an hour...  I said something jokingly to the nurse the other day and she cracked up laughing saying she totally saw it.  (Then to my surprise she said she was going to ask the director to take them down because they have other flu shot ads they could post.)  After my comment, I saw her look at it a few times while she was in there.  My logic was that maybe they are targeting the younger pregnant population by trying to make pregnant + flu shot = cool + trendy.  But it seems to me no one (whether you are 15 and pregnant or 4 and pregnant) would be encouraged by this ad...  Shame on you whoever designed this ad!

    Lurker here.  But I'm also in MD and I want to see this ad!  What hospital (not that I plan on being in a hospital any time soon).

    St. Mary's, but I saw it in Calvert Memorial, too.  I forget who put it out (darn pregnancy brain!).  It is hilarious (in an offensive kind of way).  I just tried Google-ing it but can't find it.  Maybe it's just a MD thing.

    From what you describe I do not think that would be considered "offensive". Possibly more so poor marketing since it seems to feature what appears to be a younger PG woman.

    I see no problem with the high heels and "cutesy handbag" though. I have been wearing high heels comfortably throughout my PG so far and know a lot of women who did up until they gave birth. And just because you are PG doesn't mean you can't be "cool" or "trendy".  Also, of course her makeup and hair are going to be perfect...it is an ad. (just sayin')

    I wish you could see it... I didn't do it full justice in my description in fear of offending anyone who resembled any of the words I could have used.

    I wish I could wear high heels - you are so lucky.  However, I have tons of cutesy handbags to make up for the lack of shoes.

    Nothing about this poster sounds offensive at all.  You're assuming that the person in the poster looks like she is 14 or 15 but if she's a model she could very well be 21 and just look young because a lot of models do - my cousin is a petite model and looks like she's about 16 but is really 28..  And sure, she probably isn't really pregnant but it's actually hard to find pregnant models so for ad companies it's just easier to stick a fake belly on a model then going through the hassel of finding pregnant models - espeically on a flu shot poster which probably already has a low budget to begin with.  And there's nothing wrong with the way she was dressed either.  I'm 38 weeks pregnant tomorrow and wore 5" heels all day in work and stood in them the for the entire 3 hours of my holiday Christmas party.  I still wear trendy outfits and always make sure that I look my best.  Just because we're pregnant doesn't mean that we need to let ourselves go.  That's just NMS.  And finally - it's an advertisement - the entire point is to try and convince you to go and get your flu shot and pretty people make better posters.

    I live in MD too, but the medical offices I frequent actually do not encourage the flu shot for anyone so I haven't seen it.  I do agree with you that it's pretty ridiculous.  I think a lot of the "marketing" out there to women is pretty ridiculous.  I don't wear high heels as it is.  I wore them when I was a teenager and was concerned about what other people think of me and got my self-worth from following the trends of others.  Then I became a health care professional, and I have to laugh at all the women who come into my office with knee and back problems but refuse to wear flat shoes b/c making their legs look longer is more important to them than the excruciating pain they are in.  Or the women with neuromas who still squeeze their feet into pointy toe shoes.  Seriously, I have multiple patients who would rather take heavy duty pain killers, get multiple cortisone injections, or have surgery than give up their "trendy" clothing styles that are causing all this pain.  I even have a friend who wears a ton of toxic make-up but is on disability for migraines.  It's just ridiculous to me what women will do to their body in the name of looking "cute" or "trendy".  I'm not suggesting everyone put a bag over their head or stop combing their hair.  But 5 inch spikey heels aren't good, health wise, for anyone - pregnant or not.

    I'm a "younger-looking" 25 year old that hasn't worn jeans and sneakers in years.. so.. I don't know.. Maybe it was a silly ad, but not offensive in my opinion. 
     
    Also, there is nothing even remotely trendy about flu shots. haha! I don't think that it's at all possible to try and make a flu shot look cool.

    Thanks!!!  That is all I wanted to hear.  One woman who didn't take my post the wrong way and understood where I was coming from!
