One Month Old Focus

Hey there, quick question, if you have experience or a link to something that could explain this.

My daughter will be a month old tomorrow, and at birth, she seemed to be pretty good at regarding faces, and focusing (that could have been me just thinking she was focusing though.). Now, she has crossed eyes most of the time, and doesn't seem to be looking at anything. At a month old, should she be able to focus well, or am I making a big deal out of nothing? I take her to her weight checks on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and I have asked about it at every one for the past two weeks, but they just tell me to bring it up at her 2 month well baby checkup. Well, if there's an issue, I think nipping it in the bud would be a better option than waiting another month and maybe letting it worsen.

I guess my question is just should she be focusing by now?

Re: One Month Old Focus

  • I have just started noticing the past week or so DS looking at me in the eye while nursing. Before this, he would simply look at something "far off" or "through me". Babies can't see very far very well for a while.

I've heard that newborns cannot use both eyes in conjunction when looking at something in the first few days, which is why they can look cross-eyed in the beginning. However, I don't know how long that would last.

When is her 2-mo check up?

  • I believe (and I might be mistaken) that cross eyes are pretty common, because they are attempting to focus.  She probably wasn't actually focusing as a newborn.  They can only see things very close to their faces when they are first born.  As they get older, they start to recognize faces and can see further.  DD is now 2 months and she gets cross eyed as she attempts to focus.  She is definitely recognizing us, focusing more, and smiling as a result, which is really nice.
