3rd Trimester

My baby is huge... anyone else?

I had an ultrasound yesterday and they are estimating her size to be 8 lbs 5 oz already! I totally realize it may not be entirely accurate (they told me it could be plus or minus a pound) but seriously?!? I am not even 37 weeks yet and the tech told me to expect that she could easily still gain half a pound a week.  I don't have gestational diabetes either. My previous babies were 7 lbs 4 oz (born at 40 weeks) and 5 lbs 8 oz (born at 37 weeks due to pre-e). I'm kinda freaking out here.... though I realize that will do me no good either LOL. Anyone else with a big baby?

Re: My baby is huge... anyone else?

  • Yep - at 34w LO was measuring in at 6lbs 11oz (97th percentile), which would put him on track to nearly equal your LO by 37w.  I've been told to expect him to be 8+ lbs when he's born, and I'm being induced at 38w.  But honestly, the margin of error in a 3rd tri u/s is +/- 3 weeks, which is actually closer to 2lbs than 1, so I'm trying to relax and keep that in mind (and hoping against hope that he's a little bit on the smaller side, rather than larger!).

  • Both of my boys were 8.5 pounds at birth. They induced me with my second (on my due date) because he was measuring 8 pounds at a 36 week ultrasound. Don't always trust what the scan says. :]

  • Mine was measuring 7.5 pounds at 35 weeks but that is definitely not always accurate.  With DS they estimated 8.5 pounds at 39 weeks and he was 7.5 pounds.  I wouldn't stress!

  • I just had an ultrasound at 32 weeks, 5 days and they said she is 5 pounds 6 ounces.  My little chubby girl!  The doctor said that the new machine they have is within 10% of the actual weight.  I'm not worrying yet, but he has always said he won't let me push out a 10 pound baby.

  • with my son they were totally off ! they said he would weigh 10pds!! well he was 7pds14oz my daughter the machine was on the money 9pds 4 oz ... this time both my twins are at 64% at 3pds even
  • I haven't had an ultrasound, but the OB guessed at 36 weeks that he's already 7-7.5 pounds. My SIL and BFF both said their doctor's guessed their kids would be big and they all turned out small.
  • yeah at my 31 week US they said that Alex was 4IBs 1oz already. >_< We are checking again at 37 weeks to see where he's at.

  • At my 32 week she was measuring 5.5# and was breech. At 37 weeks they did a position check u/s and the tech said "she's going to be big" but didn't do all the measurements because it was just a position check.

With DS they estimated him to be a 7# baby and he was 8#10oz, so I know they can be inaccurate. Since I'm having a scheduled c/s I'm really not too worried.

  • My fundal measurements have been 4-5 weeks ahead  since about 25 ish weeks and that is why I've had the additional ultrasounds. My brain knows that these things aren't super accurate but I still can't help but be a little scared. The important thing was that my placenta looked healthy and fluid levels were great so that is what really matters. She is just happy and doing well in there I guess! My doctor did say though that they wouldn't let me go overdue and possibly would induce a little early so I guess I can just know that she'll be here within the next 3 weeks!

  • At 36 weeks LO measured at 8.6 lbs. I had LO via c/s at 39 weeks and he was 9.13 lbs. They say they gain .5 lbs/week. So mine was pretty much right on. Sometimes the scans can be off, but other times they are accurate.
  • I was told for weeks that I would be having a big baby.  The day before I was induced, the ultrasound tech said the baby weighed 7 lbs 14 oz.  He was born a day and a half later weighing 7 lbs 11 oz.  I did not think 7 11 was a big baby, but the drs were expecting that he would weigh more!
  • I truly believe that our bodies grow babies that we can deliver. It doesn't make sense for our LOs to be too big that we can't deliver them vaginally. My friend delivered her 2nd at 41 weeks and he was only 10 pounds and she's only 5'5".
  • I was induced this Tuesday night 39w 3d due to serious pain in my hips (unable to walk) and her size (est at 35 weeks to be 80% around 7+lbs). Induction wasn't working, we tried everything and after 24+ hours the Doctor decided to do a C-Section. I wasn't progressing, she was very high and after a few exams est her weight to be very close to 9lbs.

    Well...Sadie Ann Grace was....

    6lbs 4oz!

We were able to go home today so needless to say we also made a run to Carters for some clothes as we didn't purchase anything in newborn. :O)

So my baby "was" huge but turned out to be pretty tiny.
