My job [can] involve a decent amount of travel. I've sort of taken on a new role with my company, so haven't been traveling nearly as much as I would have expected, which is okay with me now that I have DS and this one on the way. Don't get me wrong, I adore traveling, but I don't like being away from my son for too long. Of course, not long after my BFP but before we'd announced to anyone, my boss said he'd like me to go to Barcelona at the end of March for a week long trip. Normally I'd be thrilled because of the destination and all that. However I'll have just entered the 3rd trimester, and although it's technically safe to fly, I don't think I feel comfortable going to another continent at that point in my pregnancy. In addition, at that point in my pregnancy with DS I was having a LOT of pain whenever I spent a good amount of time on my feet (my job could require running all over a hotel ALL DAY, unless I convince my boss to allow me to take over some other tasks).
So, I'm somewhat conflicted because, uh, it's BARCELONA and I've never been there, would love to go, blah blah blah. My boss seems to think I'll be fine to go, even now that he knows about my pregnancy.
What would you do? Explain your limitations to your boss and go on the trip, or just tell him a flat out no? It sounds stupid but I'm nervous that he'll be angry with me if I don't go. Something in my gut (ha, no pun intended) tells me its best to stay at home.
Re: International Travel
I agree with pp. If there's a chance you'll be uncomfortable, how would you feel on a long flight too?
It's great that you have so much advanced warning, sometimes my husband gets a week's notice before traveling to Germany. That being said, you have no idea how you will be feeling at that point of your pregnancy. I agree, be up front about your concerns, but don't necessarily say flat out "no". Is there someone else that could travel in your place if need be? Can you plan to be the one to take the trip but before confirming the tickets, see how you feel and get your doctor's opinion. If not, you'll have a plan B on the back burner.
Good luck.
I usually travel a lot for work and go to Europe and Asia at least one time each in a calender year. My boss told me not to worry about it for this year because I would be going around the March/April time frame and she doesn't want to put me in a spot where I am uncomfortable. The flights worry me with being uncomfortable and increased chance of blood clots, scary, I know, but I know someone who went into 2 months early due to a blood clot on an international flight. So not worth it to me.
Also, I am usually alone on this trip and I hate the thought of lugging my crap through multiple international airports with belly! And not being totally sure of what is in my food sometimes makes me relieved I am able to just focus on the pregnancy and not work trips.
