2nd Trimester

NT Scan

Hi ladies,

Lurking from 1st tri. here....

For those of you that had the NT scan, did the doctor try and predict the sex of the baby? I know it's WAY to early to count on it being correct, but I'm just curious if they made an attempt. And if they did, was it correct at your 18-20 week ultrasound?

Thanks!

  • Mine didn't, I thought it was something you had to specifically ask for.

  • I had mine early, I think 11w5d and I didn't even ask, nor did she offer.

  • Mine would not.  I had a u/s at 16w+ some days and that was later verified at my anatomy scan.

  • i didn't ask, and it wasn't offered.  11-13 weeks is way too early to tell via ultrasound with any degree of accuracy.

  • They did with both of my boys and they were correct. This time they tried and we couldn't get a good shot, so no guess.

  • Our tech asked if it was obvious when they did the scan if we wanted to know...Well it was very obvious during the scan, so she told us. She was right - we had a boy.
  • My doctor nor the tech ever bothered in even trying to look.  The sex of the baby was never brought up at all.  I would not trust a "guess" at that stage at all, so I never bothered in asking anyways.

  • My tech told me it is a boy. She said she has only been wrong once and to let her know if she is.  We will see in January!!

I do have 2 friends that the predictions made at 12w were correct, but I still would not go painting or planing for either sex till later.

    Good luck at your scan.

  • We asked if the technician would take a guess at the NT scan (13w1d). She guessed girl. She also said don't go out and buy everything in pink just yet. At 18w we found out her guess was right.

  • No. And I'm surprised that some people's techs did make a guess. You have to have the NT scan before 13 weeks, which is way too early to tell the sex of the baby. Usually the techs will tell you the sex of the baby at the very end of the anatomy scan, around 20 weeks. You can tell the sex as early as 16 weeks, though.

  • Mine asked me at the NT scan if I wanted to know what we were having, then pretended he did not see when I said no LOL!  I figured it was a boy at that point because they usually won't confirm a girl at that point.

  • If you're curious as to how they guess, see this:

    https://www.baby2see.com/gender/external_genitals.html

To all the people that say "it's really obvious", everyone has what looks like a penis at 11 weeks. Some techs will make a prediction based on the "angle of the dangle", but you can't accidentally see the penis and know anything that early.

  • Mine didn't offer, and I didn't ask. I think I'd get attached to whatever sex they guessed, and would end up feeling somewhat disappointed if it was wrong. I'd rather just wait until they can be sure.

  • When we had the nt scan with our DD, we didn't ask the sonographer to guess.

With this LO, we did ask, and the sonographer guessed girl but I am STILL very early to tell so we are not thinking it's a girl by any means. It was just kind of fun to take a guess.

I have a subchorionic hemorrhage which they found this past week at my NT scan, so I have a follow up u/s in 3 weeks to see what's going on with it. Maybe doc will be able to see better then!

This.  We had our NT at 12 weeks and the technician didn't offer any info, but I saw the potty shot go by on the screen and it was obvious from that we were having a boy.  I asked the tech to go back and she said she was fairly sure we are having a boy.  It was confirmed at our 16.5 week elective 4D scan.

  • Nope, but baby was being so uncooperative that it took three separate tries to get the measurement he needed, so I'm sure that was the last thing he was even looking at.
