what do you do when feeding your LO?

...um, yeah.  see title.  Smile

now that he can latch on and eat w/o me supporting him (he's just propped up on a pillow), I do stuff on the computer - bump, email, FB, catch up on my rss feeds, ...   (eta: i never interacted w/him much before b/c i was concentrating so hard on getting him latched on, maintaining a good latch, doing breast compressions, listening for his swallows, etc...)

but then I was wondering - maybe I could talk to him?  sing?  read?  i don't know...do you interact with your LO's while you're feeding them, or just be quiet and let them eat?

Re: what do you do when feeding your LO?

  • When she was small I would watch TV or surf the net on my laptop, especially if she was nursing with her eyes closed. Sometimes I'd sing or talk to her, but generall once she was older, more alert. Now, she's a super fast nurser and gets distracted easily so I mainly just make lots of eye contact, stroke her hair, rock her, etc. and sometimes sing.

  • I pretty much watch TV or am on the laptop.  I still haven't figured out how to nurse completely hands-free, though. I don't interact with him too much because he usually gets mad/fussy or sleepy if I try to talk to him, stroke his hair, etc.

ETA: He usually stares at things while nursing...though I'm not quite sure what he's looking at.  There's not much to see around here (I'm nursing him right now.)  Maybe he's just concentrating really hard on nursing?

  • I usually am checking email, facebook, or here on my phone.  Anything else it too hard since we bottle feed and I only really have one hand.  I always feel like I should interact with him more, but he's not really interested.  He seems to just want to eat in peace, so I usually let him.

  • I nurse while lying down, so I'm usually on my Droid or sometimes sleeping =P But he knows that I'm on my Droid so he'll stop to look at it, roll over and try to grab it, so I stopped using my Droid if he's wide awake. But I can't really talk/sing either cuz he'll just stop nursing and look at me (and any other sounds) since he's so easily distracted! So if we're both awake and nursing, then I just look at him, hug him, and sometimes, I stroke his head/hair...

  • I used to check my phone, go on the computer or read but then I read that you shouldn't do that- it makes baby feel that you're not paying attention to them, so i stopped :) now that he is older, he does get distracted easily so I usually just look at him and make sure to keep him focused or stroke his cheeks/hair.
  • I just let him eat in peace, except of course when he was really little and would fall asleep during feedings!

But even now when he gets his milk at a meal first, he seems to just want to drink it in peace and not eat or be bothered at all until he finishes it.

  • LOL, when I saw the headline, I was like... Um, I feed her! And I try to eat myself... And try to prevent her from throwing food off her high chair, or tossing her sippy cup. Enjoy the easy meals while you can.......... Soon feeding your LO while checking e-mail won't be possible!

(We just finished bkfst, she is now tearing thorough my christmas gifts, so I'd better go stop her... it's just so fun, let's unwrap gifts every day!)
