Two Under 2

Bottle help for 2u1

We are currently trying to stop giving bottles and only sippy cups to DD1, but it is very hard now that DD2 is here.  DD1 wants to take the younger ones bottle and pacifier every chance she gets.  Any suggestions?

TIA

Re: Bottle help for 2u1

  • Honestly, If I were you, I would not push it. Yes it is a PITA. but there are SO many changes for your first DD, that adding that in to the mix is a lot! She will give up the bottle in her time, but she is still a baby! let her have her bottle! Offer a sippy at meals, and give the bottle before naps, or inbetween when you normally would. We got DS 1 off the bottle completely when he was 15 months. We began having DH make a smoothie with him at night, so it was a great replacement for that night bottle!.

I am not your DD's mom, so I am only offering suggestions, but 12 months for giving up the bottle is only a suggested age, not mandatory. why force it. I know it will make your life easier, but we currently have two with bottles, and it is not that much worse than one!It is actually much easier than fighting the older one for the younger one's bottle.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

  • Honestly - since you didn't do it before #2 was born...I'd wait a little while to help #1 with the transition. My DS stopped taking bottles at about 16 months - and it was all on his own...but before that he would really need that comfort when things got a little hectic. Another thing to try is giving #2 different pacifiers and bottles. GL!
  • I'd probably wait a little while because she needs time to adjust to the new baby and not make any negative associations. I would keep the sippy around and offer it throughout the day but let her have the bottle if she wants it. I'd slowly start offering the bottle less often and use tons of positive reinforcement with the sippy cup encouraging "big girl" things.

  • Thanks everyone, I will not push it. She is only taking 2 or 3 bottles a day. I know there are a lot of changes in our house now so we will let this one just work itself out.  I am sure this will be a minor issue in the grand scheme of life with 2u1 soon to be 2u2.
