School-Aged Children

What do your kids enjoy...

... doing over winter break?

What age is your child (or ages of your children)?

How long are they out of school?

Do they have Christmas (or whichever holiday you celebrate) events that they do every year?

What are your traditions at home?

Do they have any special "jobs" that they do over the holiday? It could be anything from baking cookies and decorating to chores.

Anything else you'd like to share about your holiday plans?

Are you looking forward to doing something with them that you don't get to do with their school schedule?

Re: What do your kids enjoy...

  • ... doing over winter break? My daughter likes having free time. She loves that it's unstructured. She's excited that my mom "Granny" is coming to visit from another state.

What age is your child (or ages of your children)? 9

How long are they out of school? 2 weeks + 1 day

Do they have Christmas (or whichever holiday you celebrate) events that they do every year? We always do the Santa Train. It is a historic train that departs from one station... travels to Santa's place. When it stops, we go get a photo and a present from Santa. My daughter said he is the REAL one. She looked at his face and could tell. They also make cookies in an old coal oven on one of the cars that is at the train museum. We eat cookies and drink hot chocolate. Our other events are pretty basic... going to see Christmas lights and visiting family and friends.

What are your traditions at home? We need some! I don't have anything to pass down from my parents. I wish we had a couple of old recipes... or traditions... but, we don't.

Do they have any special "jobs" that they do over the holiday? It could be anything from baking cookies and decorating to chores. No. Again, I need ideas.

Anything else you'd like to share about your holiday plans? I hope it snows. Some of the best winter break memories are of funny things that we did when it was snowing in our neighborhood.

Are you looking forward to doing something with them that you don't get to do with their school schedule? I want to play tourist. Our art museum has the Picasso exhibit. It's in an area with lots of other holiday activities.

They enjoy meeting up with friends, going out to lunch, going to the library and staying up late watching movies since they don't have school in the morning.

What age is your child (or ages of your children)?

    5 and 3.5

How long are they out of school?

5 y/o is out for 2 weeks, 3.5 y/o for 1 week (although it's going to be really hard to get her to school when DS is staying home)

Do they have Christmas (or whichever holiday you celebrate) events that they do every year?

Holiday programs at both schools.  DS's is Friday afternoon, DD's if Friday evening.

What are your traditions at home?

We don't celebrate Christmas, so our only big tradition is to get Chinese on Xmas eve or day.  We celebrated Chanukah earlier in the month.  Each child made their own Menorah at Sunday school and we lit those all week.  They get a gift each day too, but not a big one every day.  They're thrilled with getting new PJs for Chanukah.  lol!

Do they have any special "jobs" that they do over the holiday? It could be anything from baking cookies and decorating to chores.

    Nope.

Are you looking forward to doing something with them that you don't get to do with their school schedule?

I have been stocking up on Groupon deals for the break.  We will be taking them to the Science Center for half off and an inflatables place each week for open jump time.  We'll probably do a matinee movie one day, too and a couple lunches with friends at McDonald's with the play area, I'm sure.  Should be fun!

    ... doing over winter break?

What age is your child (or ages of your children)?

    6 and 10

How long are they out of school?

a week to 10 days, depending on how the holidays fall in the week.

Do they have Christmas (or whichever holiday you celebrate) events that they do every year?

we have DH's entire family over for Christmas Eve -- it's a BIG celebration.  We have special Ukranian food, etc.  Really fun.  We spend Christmas morning at home, just the 4 of us.  In the afternoon we go to my parents' house for more presents and dinner.  We always set the 26th aside for playing with new toys and just have a "laid back PJ day at home."  I try to schedule some playdates for the kids later in the week.  I teach, so I'm on break too.  I blow off email and phone for the whole week and spend it playing with my kids' new stuff with them.

What are your traditions at home?

Making cookies, baking bread for teacher gifts, nothing major.

Do they have any special "jobs" that they do over the holiday? It could be anything from baking cookies and decorating to chores.

    Not really.

Anything else you'd like to share about your holiday plans?

Are you looking forward to doing something with them that you don't get to do with their school schedule?

Yes.  We never have time for stuff like: craft projects, science kits, building huge Lego structures, etc.  Anything they get that involves extended and sustained time tends to get put on the back burner.  So we try to do all of that stuff during Christmas break.
