update

i finally have more than five minutes to sit down and update more than just the blog.

rory spent at total of 20 days in the NICU. he came home on 12/7/10 and has been doing really well with breastfeeding since then. [as a matter of fact, he nursed pretty constantly for the first two nights; i think he was trying to build up the minimal supply i had from pumping.]

i'm so paranoid about breastfeeding. it didn't work with deacon, so i find myself wondering if he's eating enough constantly. he's wetting and dirtying diapers well, so i guess that's the indication, right?

how is everyone? i've missed this board so much!

Re: update

  • I can't believe he is already a month old!

I was always super worried in the beginning, too. One thing that helped me was going to a bfing support center and weighing her before and after feedings. It just helped me to know how much she was getting until I was more comfortable.

  • should i try using the scale we have to weigh him before and after? i don't want to be so paranoid that i have to do it with all feedings, but i'd like to know how much he's getting. :/
  • If you scale does lbs and ounces, then definitely do it. You just need some peace of mind, and I understand the feeling well :)
  • I don't think your scale will be sensitive enough, but you can try it.  : )

The real indication is poopy diapers, actually.  But wet ones count, too.

Many, many mothers worry they're not making enough milk, and it's usually without merit, if that makes you feel any better.  It's really an emotional remnant of all those 20th century generations not nursing.  In your case, you had difficulty before, so you're probably being even harder on yourself.  Don't be!  Instead, you should feel very, very proud of yourself that you're able to feed him the way nature intended.

  • I go to a breastfeeding support group to do before and after weights, and honestly it stresses me out more than it helps.  My little guy is huge and gaining weight like crazy, but I still get stressed.  I would just weigh him at the pedi once a week or so!

Glad you guys are doing well!

  • Welcome home!  So glad he's doing better.  Hang in there BFing.  You can do this.

  • I think pp mentioned good ideas about getting him weighed.  I personally would go to a LC or support group that had a good scale (since you're really going for a few oz difference only).  That said, # of poopy/wet diapers and steady weight gain is really what you're looking for.

It's good to see you! :)
