Sudafed?

Has anyone ever taken sudafed or anything similar while pregnant?  I called my doctor this morning to ask what medicine I can take for my sinus infection.  They recommended Sudafed for the congestion, however I mentioned it to my husband and 3rd time prego friend and they both said that does not sound like a good idea.

Re: Sudafed?

  • It depends on you doctor. Mine is very adamant about no sudafed, but I have heard lots of ladies whose doctors say to take it. If you look at the research the studies show defects in rats when way more than the recommended does is consumed. Heck, it is only recently they started telling women not to take it. I have severe allergies and keep some in the house that I take when my congestion is really bad, even though my doctor doesn't approve. It's the only thing that keeps sinus infections away for me. Whoops.

  • I have had to take it numerous times (like twice a week) this entire pregnancy.  It is on my doc's safe list.  I was on Allegra-D prior to getting pregnant and now had to switch just to regular allegra and the sinus headaches have been awful.

  • Is your husband a doctor? Why would you trust him more than one?

Most doctors have Sudafed on the "approved" list. It's up to you how much you want to suffer. Honestly, Sudafed does nothing for me anyway. When I was congested, I ended up taking Dristan for 3 or 4 nights so I could sleep (it's also class C on safefetus.com).

  • I've taken sudafed twice a day almost my entire pregnancy. I take benedryl at night. Both were on my dr's safe list. As long as it's the plain kind. noting with a decongestant or anything like that.

  • My OB is fine with sudafed. I've taken it during both of my pregnancies.

  • I was on Sudafed during the day and Robitussen at night for two weeks and had no issues (other than being able to breathe).  My doctors have both on their 'safe' list.  I can't imagine dealing with a bad cold or allergies without it.

If your doctor says it is safe, I don't see why you wouldn't feel ok taking it.

Sudafed is a decongestant...so it's impossible to get one without it. Unless I am misunderstanding your statement.

  • I was talking about things like Tylenol Cold or Cold and Sinus stuff. Decongestant probably wasn't the right word. My OB just said the most basic form of the medicine.

  • Yup, totally on my hospital (Penn)'s safe list.
  • My doctor's safe list had just four meds on it but Sudafed was one of them.

Did your husband give a reason for his opposition?

  • I was just looking this up today and found that most sites (as well as my doctor) list regular Sudafed on their safe lists.  However, that's not the same as Sudafed PE.  I believe regular Sudafed is found behind the pharmacist, so you'll have to ask for it.

  • Lol I just took another dose like 5 minutes ago.

I told my doc that I have a horrible cold on Wednesday.  She asked if I was taking Sudafed and I said that no, I hadn't been taking anything.  She looked at me like I was nuts.  She said to take S and Tylenol or get the Tylenol Day stuff that is the combination of both.

  • My docs/midwives said it is fine. I have taken it twice so far this pregnancy- once for a sinus headache, and the other as a decongestant. Both times it was for fewer than 3 days. For the headache I also took a little less than the reccomended dosage and it helped.
  • I just had an appointment yesterday and mentioned it to my doctor. She said it was ok to take Sudafed but no for a prolonged period of time. She also recommended to Claritin.
