Babies: 3 - 6 Months

breastfeeding and dizziness/shakiness

My LO is going on 5 months and I EBF. In the past couple weeks, I've been feeling increasingly faint/weak/dizzy/shaky to the point where I worry a little re: holding my LO unless seated. I've been eating constantly, so skipping meals is not the issue (my appetite is out of control, actually). I've also had an almost constant low level headache. I attributed these things to lack of sleep, but now I'm wondering if it could be something pertaining to nutrition or other aspects of my health. I have an appointment with my OB on Monday and plan to ask her, but am wondering if others have experienced this. I don't think it is thyroid related, as I haven't had any significant weight concerns (not being able to lose, etc.). I really do feel as if somebody has sucked the life force right out of me, and that wasn't the case a month ago, and there have been no significant changes. I did get a little neglectful re: taking prenatal vitamins...but for that to make such a difference seems unusual. Blablabla...just curious if this has happened to others and if so, what it turned out to be. Oh - and I am a vegetarian, but that has never been a big deal.

  • I'm going through this too, but not quite as bad as you are. I don't think it's sleep related - I'm getting more sleep lately, but feel worse. I started getting on myself to take my vitamins more regularly in the hopes that it will help.  For what it's worth, I'm vegetarian too - maybe we're lacking something like iron, B vitamins or protein?  I cook pretty healthy meals, but maybe BFing is taking certain things out of our system that we aren't getting enough of.  Perhaps since our babies are growing and BM changes as they get older, it's requiring more of something.  Definitely let us know what your OB says!

  • Maybe you're dehydrated?  Dehydration can make you feel miserable!  Besides during pregnancy have you ever had your blood sugar checked?  And maybe like PP said you might be lacking something in your diet that wasn't a big deal before but because you're BFing it might be taking it's toll.  I would definitely get checked out because that feeling is awful!

I don't know about OP, but I'm definitely not dehydrated! I drink at least 2 -3 liters of water a day, plus some milk and/or juice in the evenings.

  • I get really dizzy and light headed quite frequently as well. I just keep dealing with it and haven't sought professional advice. I know I'm not dehydrated either and take my vitamins. Let us know what you find out!

  • i could have written this!  dizziness, weak, headache, no energy. I also EBF, appetite is fine, etc. Also, i've been terrible about taking my prenatals.

let us know what the doc says...maybe i should see my own doc!

  • Thanks, guys. I'm definitely not dehydrated...I probably drink at least a gallon of water a day (I'm really thirsty all the time, too). I can't help but think that I'm lacking something in my diet. I'll keep you posted on what my OB says.
  • Welcome to my world!

    Are you on BC?

My midwife thinks I either have post-partum thyroiditis (check out those symptoms) or it's my Depo.

I'm weak, sometime dizzy, though I call it more of a 'foggy brain' feeling.

No BC here...I really don't want this to be a thyroid issue...ugh. I'm hoping for simple sleep deprivation (unlikely) or dietary thing I can change:)
