Babies: 9 - 12 Months

If your LO is still not crawling, pulling up, or walking...

Is your pedi concerned?  We had our 9 month appt. last month, and the pedi told us to try taking DS to some Gymboree/Little Gym type classes.  She wanted to see him in a month to see if he was making any progress.  Our followup appt. was today (DS is 10 mos. exactly today) and though DS has started army crawling and pushing up on all fours since our last appt., she has referred us to PT for an assessment.  She thinks he can crawl or pull up to sitting or standing and that he is just choosing not to or isn't motivated to do so.  I wasn't worried about his motor development until the pedi made it sound like we need to be.

Anyone else have any experience with physical therapy for an infant?  Thanks.

Re: If your LO is still not crawling, pulling up, or walking...

  • We had to go when DS 2 months and he was finally released when he was 6 months for Torticollis and Plagiocephaly. The PT we saw was wonderful! We only had to go once a week and we had a lot of exercises to work on at home. Now, he is fine and you would never know that he had any issues at all. I think being in PT actually made him start with his crawling, and pulling up earlier because of the exercises that they and we did with him.

The thought of it was very scary to me at first. Everything worked out though. For me, I actually liked it because I got to ask the PT a lot of questions about development milestones coming up and what to look for, etc. You know all of those questions that you forget to ask at the pedi appts! Wink

    Good Luck!

  • I don't know where you live, but here (NY) we have something called Early Intervention (EI) DS#2 didn't crawl or pull up until 11 months and didn't take his first steps until about 18 months.  We got him evaluated and he got OT and PT services starting around 18 months (we started at the 15 month appointment and it takes a few months to evaluate and start services)  I wish we could have started sooner, but at his 12 month appointment he was at least scooting across the floor so the pediatrician wanted to give it some more time.  He is now 3 1/2 and still gets services, but I can't tell you how much the services have helped him.  He used to fall ALL the time (it looked like I abused him) and he couldn't get up if he was lying on his back.  He acts like a normal 3 1/2 year old, just a little clumsy now and then, but SO much better. your DS might be a little behind, but don't be concerned, get the eval. and if he qualifies they can catch him up.. GL!

  • Thank you so much for your replies.  I am not so much worried about the act of visiting the PT, I think I kind of know what to expect.  I am more worried about what having to visit the PT means...like the possibility of my DS having a delay.  MammaBear, thanks for sharing your experience.  My pedi actually did mention something like CDS (which I assume is a form of my state's EI) and that we may need a referral for that depending on how the PT's assessment goes.

I think I just have the normal "mommy guilt" issues that there is something differently I could have done (although I am fairly certain that is not the case.)  FWIW, my husband walked really late also (I think around 16-17 mos.)

     Thanks!

  • My DD is not doing any of those things and my pedi was not concerned.  She said crawling is not a milestone and my DD is mobile by rolling and army crawling.  She sits unassisted and can get herself up to sitting if she was on an incline but not if she is laying flat.  My pedi said she was ahead on fine motor skills and that she is more concerned when a child is walking and crawling at 9 or 10 months and not interacting or mimicking than she is if a child is not crawling at that age.  I am sure your LO is fine.  GL
