Early ultrasounds

It seems like there a lot of ladies getting ultrasounds already. Is there a reason for it or is that just what your office does?

With DD I had a dating one at 7w because I had no idea when my LMP was, but otherwise I would have had to wait until 20w, like I probably will with this one.

Re: Early ultrasounds

  • I have had 2 mc and then some bleeding this week. I was actually scheduled for one today 6 weeks but had one on Wednesday because of the bleeding.

They are watching me very closely with my history.

  • I have had 2 u/s but that is because I had a sub-chorionic hemorrhage. From what I understand, my doc. office does them at 20 weeks otherwise.

Wink I didn't get that vibe at all. I was wondering about the huge differences in everyone getting them as well!

  • I had an u/s at my 1st appointment with my 1st pregnancy. I'll see if I'll get one next week.

  • I've had them once a week so far because of conceiving via IVF.  Our RE will continue to see us until 8 weeks, then we will transition to a normal OB-GYN.

  • I had a missed m/c in August, so they are monitoring this pregnancy differently than the last one.   My Drs normal procedure is to not do an u/s until 10 weeks (and that's only if they can't find the hb on a doppler)

Now I go in at 7 weeks and if all is well I start their regular schedule of care at 10 weeks.

  • 20 Wks seems late, but I went early b/c I felt stabbing pain on my left side (it was intense). They wanted to make sure it wasn't an etopic pregnancy. Plus my Dr. specializes in high risk pregnancies and is more cautious than others I think.

I ovulated from the left side which is why i have the cramping, but nothing to worry about.

  • It sounds like it's pretty normal for my office to give them from 6-8 weeks - but maybe that's b/c I had early bleeding, so that's why they're offering me one.
  • With my previous pregnancies, I had to wait until 18-20 weeks. This time I will have an early one to date, but only because that's how my new doctor's office works.

  • I had one at 6 weeks but only because I was bleeding. I would have had to wait until around 20 weeks otherwise.
  • I have an appointment on Tuesday (7w6d) for an ultrasound.  I had an early one with my last doctor too - at 6-7 weeks, then again at 12 weeks... that was just how they did it.  I am not high-risk, never experienced a loss, am fairly young (23 last time, 28 now)... not sure why, but I LOVE having them :)  I think I'd have such a hard time waiting 20 weeks!
  • Typically my ob/gyn does a viability ultrasound between 6 and 8 weeks.  After that I would get a nuchal around 11 weeks and an anatomy check at around 18 weeks.

However, I've had two losses in a row so I'm seeing a specialist who does an ultrasound every week.  So, assuming this pregnancy continues on a good path I will have easily 15 or more with this pregnancy.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • My doctor does an internal every time I see her.  They like to monitor you closely in the first few weeks, I have to go back every two weeks.  I'm only 7 weeks (almost 8) but I've already had 3 internals.  I like it because we already have a lot of pics and I'm much more relaxed knowing whats going on.  But other than that, there's no real reason.  This is my first pregnancy and I've never had problems before, so I guess it's just what the office does.

  • i haven't had one yet, but will in January to date the pregnancy since if I dated by my LMP i'd be 2 weeks further along than I think I am since my cycles were long.

  • I had a high-risk pregnancy last time and a premature baby, so we're watching things closer this time around (not that I wasn't last time) because I'm more comfortable with that. My first u/s is at 7.5w, which is later than normal (for me) because we're OOT.

  • We were IVF.  After doubling beta numbers, our RE does the first u/s at 7 weeks.  We went at 6w5d because I couldn't move a work commitment...

  • I got one on monday. They wanted to check my size of baby and to check due date. I wound up falling a week behind because of cycle and baby size.

Its a normal thing with my office. It is like there prenatal u/s.

  • 20 weeks??? wow that seems really long. Not even an NT scan?

Well I had a prior loss. So due to my high anxiety my OBGYN did an US early. My prior OBGYN usually does not do an ultrasound until 12 weeks unless they are unsure of your EDD (late ovulation etc) or unless you have spotting or an issue. They were gong to do mine at 6 weeks b/c I ovulated late and they were unsure of my EDD

  • I'm having mine because I am seeing an RE and that is their protocol.  I'll probably have four before I get kicked back to my regular OB.

If 36 earns you "advanced maternal age," I wonder what 41 gets me.

  • i go for my first appt on 12/28 (8w5d) and that's to just check for a heartbeat.  If i want the NT Scan i will have an ultrasound on 1/21, which is about 12 weeks for me.
  • I had one today because I was seeing an RE. I have another sceduled for next Tuesday and then I should be released to my OB.

  • I would probably have to wait until 20 weeks but we're going to pay a private place to *hopefully* see the heartbeat and get a little picture before xmas. We're going next week...very excited but nervous!
  • My Dr's office does them between 7-8 weeks regardless. I guess they do it to make sure everything's okay and to date the pregancy. I think that's actually the norm from what I've heard on the boards... Waiting until 20 weeks seems abnormal to me.
  • I had one at 6-ish weeks because of two previous miscarriages.  Usually my office does the first one at the first appointment between 10-12 weeks.

  • With both pregnancies so far there is one ultrasound at 6-8 weeks to check size and EDD then if you have an NT scan that's around 12 weeks and then the "big one" is around 20 weeks. I have had no fertility issues so I think that's just the routine.
  • My OB office usually does one between 7-8 weeks to check for hb/viability. Then one at 20 weeks.

  • I'm also an IVF girl who is being closely monitored by a RE. As long as baby is well on the 27th we'll graduate to the OB!!!
  • I have early and weekly ultrasounds due to monitoring IVF pregnancy with twins
  • I had an ultrasound this week at 5 weeks and will have a second one next week at 6 weeks.  I have had 4 miscarriages and my tubes are a mess so I was an extremely high risk for ectopic pregnancy.  I am seeing an RE and because of my issues they want to see that the pregnancy is progressing as it should.  If all is well for me this Tues then I will be released back to my regular OB and will probably have the typical ultrasounds from there on out.
