AW: Homemade cloth wipes PIP

We are cloth diapering and we figured since we will already be washing the CDs, why not just wash the wipes as well. On black friday one of the fabric stores was having KILLER deals on flannel. I bought 6 yards of various fabrics (saved 70% and had an additional 20% off coupon). So far I have made about 30 wipes and have enough fabric to make 20 or so more. They are by no means high quality as I am no where near a good seamstress. But as long as they wipe a little butt well, I can't really ask for anything more!

Just a word from someone who has uses homemade flannel wipes: Have some plain ones (or just get an ugly flannel you hate) on hand for times that you use non-CD friendly diaper cream (sometimes nothing cuts it but that stuff). Now and again, those ones have to get bleached .

I have that fabric in the top right (pink/brown) and I love it!

  • Super cute!  I made homemade wipes from extra receiving blankets with my son and they were the best!  Worked so much better than the disposable kind.  I kept them in my wipes warmer with a homemade solution and it worked great!

I should really get a jump on this baby and start making some more..in pink this time!

  • How do you make these?  Just double up the cloth and serge? Or is there more to it than that?  I plan on CDing at least for the first few months, so I want to make some of these too.  Also, what solution do you plan on using?

  • Wow, those look great!!  I plan to CD, but hadn't even thought about the wipes yet.  Way to go.

I didn't make mine, my mom did, but she just serged around the edges, easy peasy. They are just getting poop on them, no need for perfection.

    I use this solution:

https://www.soapsbydenise.com/babybits.htm I buy Babybits at Jillians Drawers. I cut each in half because otherwise they were too soapy. I still have half the box left and we start potty training NEXT WEEK! So one box will probably go through two kids. I add 1/2 a baby bit and 3 drops of Tea Trea Oil (not necessary but I like it for its antiseptic properties). Put them in a Peri bottle, fill with warm water, shake, and there you go.

*************************************************ANYONE WHO WILL CD MAKE SURE YOU ASK FOR AN EXTRA PERI BOTTLE AT THE HOSPITAL!!!! Very best squirt bottle ever ever EVER for wipe solution.************************************************************

I have the one I used on myself and the extra they gave me and they have lasted forever.

  • Mine are just one layer of birdseye cloth (from Verybaby.com) serged around the edges.  Nothing fancy.  The birdseye has some grab to it, so the poop comes right off.  NB poop isn't clingy, so that won't be an issue at first.  I also like that I can fit a lot in the wipe warmer, since they are thin.

I like using a wipe warmer, so they are all ready to go, but I know a lot of people just wet them as they use them.

I make a big batch of solution and keep it in a 64 oz Apple Juice bottle.

It's 4 cup water, 1/8 cup baby wash, 1/4 cup olive oil (you can also use baby oil), and 4 drops tea tree oil.   I put 24 wipes in the sink, pour some solution over them, wring them out and then roll them up to put into the wipe warmer.

I cut 8.5"x8.5" squares of the flannel, put the print sides together and sewed all but 1.5" or so, then flip it right-side-out and zig-zagged the edges. They are far from perfect, but I hope they will do!

I haven't decided on a solution yet. With the research I have done, some say just start with water, then if you run into any problems you can start using a solution. Not sure yet!

When you have to use non-CD friendly diaper cream, do you use prefolds or sposies or liners?

  • SweetJenna and Janice: you guys use warmers, have you ever had any stink issues? I have read that the cloth can get smelly in the warmer...

PPC: So you keep your wipes dry and just wet as you need one?

We use a liner (I like the fleece Bum Genius ones...not the disposable ones. If you go that route Bummis are OK but you still get a bit of  cream through them on the diaper so ick.) I do keep my wipes dry and just wet them as I go. I have a friend who used CD's and cloth wipes and she had a horrible mold problem with the wipe warmer (warm, moist environment). Obviously not everyone has this issue.

I have the Prince Lionheart warmer and it  has an antimicrobial, anti-browning pad on the bottom that you are supposed to replace every 3 months.  I have never had a problem except if I go a really long time between replacing the pads. I refill it about every 2-3 days and I always wipe it out, rewet the pad and then refill with moist wipes.

I think that antimicrobial pad makes a huge difference and also if you are changing the wipes out often enough.  I have heard of more issues when you try and warm a stack of disposable wipes that sit in the warmer for a long time.

I also bought some fleece on major sale and was considering making liners for that case as well... just haven't gotten that far. I still need to do some research.

Thank you! Maybe I will put the warmer on my registry and if I get it great, if not then I will just keep them dry.

Yeah, I think I may try wetting as I go for the baby, because I don't feel like buying another wipe warmer.  We'll see how it goes.  I can move the wipe warmer over once DS is potty trained.
