Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Not sure about this...need some advice

So, I am wondering...My son has been spitting up frequently lately after drinking his formula and last night after he ate dinner it seemed like he spit some of that up too.  I don't really know if he is spitting up or throwing up though.  He had AR as an infant but we were able to take him off his meeds at about 6 months.  No problems since then, and then this week all of a sudden it starts up again.  So my question is, do you ladies think that the spitting up is just part of him still having AR or do you think he might be sick and he is throwing up?  He has no fever, but has been a little more fussy than normal.  I have a call into the pedi, but as today is Friday and we are leaving for OH on Sunday I am not sure they will get him in.  Any advice would be great!!

  • I read recently about babies that are spitter-uppers (don't know if this applies to AR babies) will tone down around 6 months, and that it may come back around 9 months. According to your ticker your DS is 10 months old, but remember things aren't always exact. I think the point is that old problems can come back. He's probably fine. GL! :)

  • DD doesn't have AR, but she is a spitter. It pretty much went away around 8 1/2 months, but the last day or two she's been spitting up a little. I think it depends on how active she is that day. If she's on the move a lot, she spits up more. If she's feeling a little lazier, she spits up less. That could be the case with your LO, too.

  • With LO I've managed to distinguish AR as just dribbling out of the mouth and vomit to be more obviously projectile...we've suffered through 5 stomach viruses so far...

Did you introduce any new food at all? My LO can't eat cooked carrots for example. Maybe even introduced something a few days before the extra reflux?

What about juices? Those are acidic and can send a reflux baby backwards a bit in terms of AR control. LO usually gets 1 oz apple, 1 oz prune and 2 oz water and that usually does alright for her but 2 oz apple/pear and 2 oz water is enough to start her reflux again.

  • Reece is a spitter upper and always has been. It comes and goes though. When he started eating purees (we mix ours with rice cereal), he got better, but every once in a while, he goes through a phase where it comes back.

I bet it is the juice.  DH has been begging to let DS have some juice, and I know since he is home this week he has given him a little bit each day.  We'll just try stopping the juice for a couple days and see how that goes...makes me happy b/c I really didn't want him having juice yet anyways!  Thanks so much!
