Is it possible to develop a milk intolerance?

I haven't had milk in 10 months b/c DS does not tolerate it well. I just reintroduced it a week or so ago and both DS and I have had a LOT of tummy troubles. I'm guessing he still has a dairy intolerance...is it possible that I developed something like it since I haven't had milk in so long? I've had little bits of dairy like butter and cheese, just no milk.

Re: Is it possible to develop a milk intolerance?

  • Definitely.  DH stopped drinking much milk at one point to see if it would help with a medical issue of his.  Tried to go back and had severe stomach issues from it.  He now drinks lactose free milk.  It's odd, though, certain things he's fine with, and certain things not at all.  Most baked goods are fine, ice cream is usually fine (don't ask me why), cheese is generally fine, but milk and butter seem to be issues for him.

  • Ditto.  Things that are broken down longer (like hard cheeses) won't bother as badly as reg. milk.  That's how my grandfather's lactose intolerance works.  No fun!

  • Yes.  But then again, I'm of the persuasion that thinks our bodies are not designed for consuming animal products in the first place.

  • Absolutely. It wasn't until I reintroduced dairy back into my diet (DS had allergies) that I developed an intolerance.  Still lactose intolerant 2 years later :(

This is my situation when I'm pregnant. I can eat cheese but no ice cream or milk- unless I have lactaid- then I'm usually ok.
That said, as long as I'm nursing- I will refrain from dairy.  :(

  • I went from drinking boat loads of milk from childhood through my early twenties and now I can't have a single drop of milk without going into writhing pain! I can still eat most kinds of cheese, yogurt, ice cream, sour cream, cream cheese, etc...some brands don't agree with my stomach (for example blue bunny) so I know what to avoid.

OMG that just makes me cry...I love milk. I can't not tolerate it...Crying

  • It might pass. I stopped drinking milk while nursing because DS couldn't handle it.  I now drink it occassionally but it took a while.  I had stomach issues for a while and now can handle it in small doses

  • It might take time for your body to readjust to it. I reintroduced slowly and felt better after a while.
