Question re repeat c/s

so the first time I was scheduled because DS was breach...i followed pretty typical night before surgery protocol >> no food/drink after a certain time, etc.

What happens if i go into labor or my water breaks before my scheduled c/s this time?  When you go in do they make you wait for hours until whatever food you ate digests?  Do they have to wait until x amount of bags of fluid go through your IV?

Or do they just take you right away re of your state, how far apart your contractions are, etc.

Re: Question re repeat c/s

  • You can safely wait 24 hours after your water breaks before they get concerned about delivering the baby, so if your water breaks you will have plenty of time to get to the hospital and wait the 8 hours since you last ate or drank. They will monitor the babys heart rate and your contractions while they are waiting. If the babies heart rate was to drop too much or the baby was beginning to progress too far down in your pelvis, then they might go ahead and do the c-sect before the 8 hours. At my 39 week dr's visit i had ate that morning and felt kind of crampy all morning but i went to my appointment and while i was there they did an US and discovered my sons cord was wrapped around his neck and I was indeed having contractions, they told me they were going to get the baby out because of his cord as soon as possible, which since i had ate breakfast at 8 am they had to schedule it at 4 pm but they had me go straight to the hospital and be monitored while we waited till 4pm. The dr said if the heart rate was to drop drastically or if anything looked concerning then they wanted me at the hospital so they could deliver me immediately. Hope this helps!

  • This is exactly what happened to me 3 weeks ago.  I was scheduled to have a repeat c/s on the 26th but my water broke at about 10:30 pm on the 22nd.  I was told by my OB to go to the hospital asap.  The anesthesiologist was hesitant to do the spinal because I had eaten within the last few hours but they decided to do the c/s anyway because I had tested positive for that Strep B thing and because I was having active contractions (even though they weren't close together and I was only dialated 2 cm).  DS #2 was born at 1:17 am on the 23rd.

  • My first C was a slight emergency.  I went in for a non-stress test at 4pm and had sudden, severe pre-e.  Granted it was a couple hours after lunch, and I had only had a granola bar since lunch.  Anyway, by around 5pm they knew they were going to take the baby as soon as an operating room was available (which ended up not being until 9pm).
  • My first C/S was an emergency, I had eaten at 4:30pm they started an induction at 5:30pm they decided to do my C at 9:00pm because DD's heart rate was dropping. No one even mentioned that I had eaten so recently.

  • I had an emergency c/s with DS.  No, I don't think they don't make you wait, but I had been in labor for about 18 hours without food, so I had water in my stomach and that was about it.  (And had already had fluids and antibiotics.)

I'm having a repeat c/s with DD, and my OB told me that if I think (or know - if my water breaks) that I'm in labor to call the labor line right away and they'll have me come in immediately for a c/s.  (I assume it would be considered an "emergency" c/s.)

I would just ask your OB at your next appointment what you should do if you do go into labor naturally.
