Breastfeeding

1 Breast or 2 at a time?

Some women do just one breast per feeding while others offer both breasts. I personally was doing one at each feeding for as long as LO wanted (anywhere from 20-50 minutes) then would switch to the other breast for the next feeding in a few hours. My peditrician said "no no" and told me to start 15 mins on each side. This is causing some problems because my LO isn't getting enough hindmilk since I'm cutting him off short. I was wondering, if I do go back to the one breast per feeding, what happens to your other breast that is full? Do you pump that one? Or, will your body eventually balance out the production and supply so that one isn't always left uncomfortably full?

Thoughts?

  • I have always done 20 min on each side since 4 days after my milk came in but this is what the LC suggested from the begining because I get clogged ducts otherwise even if I pump. Your milk should regulate though so you will not have to pump unless you just want to.

  • My DS actually made this decision himself. I was switching sides in the beginning (he nursed for really long sessions, 40 minutes sometimes), and I would switch just to not get so sore on one side. Then all of a sudden one day around 2-3 months old he refused the other side. Since then he's probably wanted the second side like 3 times. It balances out - I still pump both sides at work. It seems to work out fine!
