WWYD about this $ situation? Long

(I also paosted this on 12-24 so sorry if you are seeing this twice)

Ok I don't post much here but I need some help. I can't stop thinking about it and I can't stop stressing over it. Maybe someone has been in my shoes that might be able to help? I hope so? So here is goes!

I work for a great company (Whole Foods Market)....I just started at the end of October so I haven't been there that long. About 2 or 3 weeks of me starting my new job my DH lost his. We went from having two paychecks to one. I get paid every two weeks which has been hard to deal with just because at my old job I was so use to getting paid weekly. Well the point to all this is that we are so broke. I have to pay rent with my paycheck that comes next week(Christmas Eve) and we really won't have any thing left over to pay any bills. And we are having our second baby in about a month. So talk about scary!

My job has a Team Emergency Fund that they give out money to Team Members in need I believe? Not exactly sure how it works. I was going to see if maybe they could help me pay my rent for this month? I was also thinking of a Church maybe? We don't attend one but we are strong beleivers. I am just looking for some help and I do have pride and I really don't want to feel like a charity case. Oh and the government won't help because they think I make to much money! I hate going through this....it is suppose to be an exciting time. What do you ladies think and I am sorry this is som long but you guys have been so helpful in the past.

TIA

  • First, I am sorry you are  dealing with this right now. This time of year is hard enough. I would look in to whatever resources you have access to, and also have DH work his booty off looking for jobs... even if it means shoveling snow. Hang in there and do what you need to do.

  • You can try to get some help from the emergency funds, but it might be a lost cause. I worked for a large corporation before, and money like that was set aside for catastrophes, like house fires, serious illness diagnosis, etc. It wasn't just for people who lost their job, didnt have an emergency plan for that happening and needed to pay their bills. With that being said, you have nothing to lose if you inquire with HR about getting help from that fund and see what they say.

Instead of asking for money, why not find some ways to make some yourself? Have your DH go to  every single temp agency within an hour of your house. A lot of times they need people for overnight shifts and since many people do not like that time to work, it's generally easier to obtain those types of positions. Is he handy? Could he post an ad on craigslist for handyman services-he could paint interior of houses, rake leaves, shovel snow, etc. What about having a yard sale to sell some unnecessary items? What about offering babysitting services in your neighborhood for moms that want some time away? Why can't your DH go on unemployment? If he's tried to and lost, can he appeal? Unless he did something really, really wrong at his last job, he should be able to collect unemployment.
