Intro: IVF#2 = first ever BFP

Hi ladies! Congrats on being here! My name is Erica and I'm a regular over on the IF board. I spent most of the last year there. I am just barely pregnant at 4 weeks 4 days. As you can see from my siggy, DH and I have struggled with unexplained IF for almost 2 1/2 years. My betas for this cycle have been on the low side, but they more than doubled and my progesterone looks great, so my doctor is not worried. Of course I am TERRIFIED. After failing at something for as long as I have, you learn to expect the worst. I'm sure thus has been asked about a zillion times but, is some cramping normal? My cramps aren't bad and I have no bleeding, but it is freaking me out. Any calming words are greatly appreciated! looking forward to getting to know you all!

  • Congratulations!!  I also did IVF.  This cycle we used a gestational carrier (sister-in-law) and got pregnant!  I know exactly how you feel.  I do know that cramping is completely normal.  As far as your Beta numbers go, my girlfriend's Beta started out a little low but it took off and she has a beautiful son!  Your numbers are doubling and I think that is a great sign!

  • I guess I should have answered your question :)  Yes, I believe some cramping is perfectly normal!

  • Hi and welcome!! Congratulations on your BFP, it must feel extra amazing after a longer journey. Best of luck for a H&H nine months! I'm not sure if cramping is normal, I had some dull cramping before my BFP but haven't really had any except the odd pang here and there which doesn't worry me.

  • Congrats! Cramping is completely normal. I had AF like cramps for about 5 days before my BFP and pretty consistently for about 5 days after. Now I get them every once in a while (a couple times a day for not long at all.)

  • Hey ladies!

Thought I would jump in and say hello!  I've been lurking here, but feel kind of out of place due to our lengthy time TTC as well as my age.  I feel like an old fart on this board. Wink

In any case, it's nice to meet you all.  DH and I also TTC for over two years, did 6 IUIs (three with Clomid), had one c/p and finally got a BFP on December 3.  I don't ever want to see anyone struggle the way we have, but it's nice to have other people who have walked in our shoes, so to speak.

And to answer your question, yes, it's perfectly normal to have some cramping.  The nurse at my RE's office told me that when she called me to give me my first beta number.

In any case, glad to be here with you all!

  • Congrats and welcome! I also did IVF/ICSI and after 5 years TTC we are finally preggo!! This must be a lucky month for IVF girls!!!!

My RE said cramping is perfectly fine but bright red blood is a concern. It's hard not to be worried. We just had an u/s on Monday and seen the hb and I am STILL nervous.

Good luck!! So happy to have you here!!

  • Hi! I also just got my BFP from an IVF cycle.  Congratulations!!! Cramping is totally okay as long as it's not severe.  I have heard zillions of times that it's totally normal.  Looking forward to getting to know you more!
  • Yay, congrats! Great to have you here!

Like everyone said, cramps are normal. I actually find them comforting because it reminds me something is going on down there.

  • How wonderful....congrats!!!

Yes, cramping is normal in 1st Tri as your uterus starts expanding to make room for all of the growth.

  • It's great to see you over here.  Congratulations.

Cramping is normal.  Mine was really bad this time around and you'd think it would be the opposite, that my uterus would be used to stretching out, but apparently not.

I know it's hard not to freak out.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • I hope this is your sticky baby! I have everything crossed for you! I TTC x 7 months and had a loss and this BFP took another 7 months. Which I know is a drop in the bucket...but I know how much IF hurts and the struggles it causes.

Cramping and light spotting are totally normal in early pregnancy!
