Preemie Moms (Weight Question)

For those of you whose LOs were born premature (before 37 weeks), how are they doing with weight?

Charlie will be 7 weeks old on Sunday and he's weighing 7 lbs. 12 oz. Our doctor hasn't expressed concern just yet, but I'm wondering how he stacks up against others preemies.

Re: Preemie Moms (Weight Question)

  • How much did he start at?  I can't imagine that Everett will be bigger than that by 7 weeks.  He was born at 5 lbs 11 oz, but has gotten down to 5 lbs 5 oz.

Charlie started at 6 lbs. 1 oz. (born at 34 weeks), but was down to 5 lbs. 10 oz. when he left the hospital at 2 weeks old. So, he has gained about 2 lbs. in the past 5-ish weeks, but I wasn't sure whether that was a lot or not for a preemie.

Hmmm.  Now I want to know!  It's awesome that he was that big born at 34.  It seems like that would probably make sense for his weight relative to the fact that his due date was only a week ago.  It would make sense to me that his current weight would be reasonable ;)  If you find out the answer any time soon--let me know!

  • Mine was 5 pounds 3 ounces when she was born at 36 weeks. She is almost 8 pounds now. She only lost 3 ounces (we FF so that had something to do with it).

Ya know, that would make sense (his due date affecting his weight). When I put him on the growth chart as a newborn, not a 7 week old, he's in the 75th percentile. Good call!

  • We go in for a weight check tomorrow and my DS is much younger then yours BUT..

He was 5.10 at birth, dropped down to 5.3 at his lowest (5 days old) and was 5.14 at 2 weeks.

  • Law weighed 6lb 10oz @ birth... 6lb 2 oz at his lowest... Now he's 8lb 6oz as of yesterday. Dr said he's in the 10th percentile but is gaining steadily as he should so there's no concern.

  • Charlie seems to be right on track with Althea. When we left the hospital she was 5 pounds 3 ounces. Not she is 7.5 pounds! She seems HUGE to me, and the doc said she is doing great. He said she will always be a little behind the "norm" until she is about a year old, and not to worry about it. Hope that helps!! Sounds like your LO is doing just what he should be!

  • We haven't had Piper weighed in two weeks---she goes this Monday for her one month appt.

She was 5lbs 11 oz at birth--got down to 5lbs 1/2 oz.  2 weeks ago she was 5lbs 9oz.  I know she has gained pretty good since then because she is fitting in newborn clothes better.

    I am guessing 6-7 pounds....

  • My little girl was 5lb, 3.6 oz at  birth and weighed 5lb, 6 oz yesterday at 6 days old. I'm pretty happy about that! Go boobs, go!

We also supplemented with formula for about a day and then with expressed BM after feedings while she was in the hospital with jaundice. We wanted to stuff her to help her poop a lot.
