Cold Weather Car Travel Tips

We are taking DD on her longest car trip yet and will likely be on the road for seven hours.  Any tips?  What to bring/not bring?  What should be in the car as opposed to the trunk?

What do you think is best for her to wear?  I know not to have her bulky jacket on, but am not sure what will be easiest otherwise.

Re: Cold Weather Car Travel Tips

  • they wear their coats in the car.   my daughter typically will wear her boots on a longer ride.   in the back of our truck (which is what we take on longer trips) i will put a blanket, my heavier boots, my snowpants, dd snowpants.  and our emergency kit--flashlight, flares, jumper cables.

we always have snacks and stuff and i make sure that the car has a full tank of gas before we head out--typically anymore we travel areas that are heavily traveled and there are houses close together so it wouldn't take too long to get somewhere for help.

  • i also throw in extra hats, mittens and scarves for all of us too
  • We have been on several road trips, as all of my family lives out of state. We usually keep the car pretty warm in the winter, so we have DS in a hoodie, onesie, jeans and socks with a blanket on his lap. We keep him layered in case he gets warm/cold. I always keep his diaper bag, toys and snacks and drinks for him and us in the back seat.

On our car seat there are a couple of places where I can attach those rings that you make into a chain and then attach a toy /toys to the end of it, so that even if he throws the toys, they aren't all over the back seat and they are pretty easy to find (and they aren't flying at DH while he is driving!)

Be careful about what you put within DD's reach on the backseat! Our Lil'Man likes to pull things into the seat with him! DS still uses a paci, so I always make sure to have several extras in my purse, just in case. I also make sure that we have extra wipes/diapers and an extra outfit or two, just in case!

    Good luck!
