I think most safety recalls are stupid.

I understand some like the dropside crib but really foam play mats?  In general everything can be potentially dangerous if your child is unsupervised.  I mean just be a parent and watch your child carefully.  I guess that is my unpopular opinon.

i agree with you, but i tend to see the recalls as a reflection of society. just like, wow enough people left a baby sitting in a bumbo on a counter top unattended that the company had to pull every single bumbo off the shelves to slap a big ol' warning sticker all over the damn thing. really? come on people!

i don't think it is a matter of supervision with the play mats, (obviously they can be a potential choking hazard) but i believe it is the chemicals that are in them.  they are harmful if breathed and shouldn't come in contact with LO's skin.

you would think these substances wouldn't be used in a baby or child item...but this is the world we live in today.

How is "proper supervision" going to keep your kid from breathing in or absorbing harmful chemicals, exactly?  Did you even read the details of this?

I am all over it.  Without that stuff, we would still have BPA and PVC in bottles.  Better communication means that fewer kids get hurt.  All those kids who eat lead-laced paint chips?  That would never have gotten as far today.  Recent recalls of toys for lead show that, and also shows that protections are not nearly as stringent as we think.

And once you get to know what consumer protections are out there, you realize that it's not CLOSE to enough.  We feel like we're protected from harmful chemicals in toys and other products.  It couldn't be further from the truth.  If chewing on a hazardous mat (and I'm pretty sure they aren't, per my post) is going to impact my son's fertility or intelligence someday, I'm absolutely for awareness.

most go overboard.  plastics don't scare me, paints not so much either.   heck stepping outside in most places you breath in more crap than what is in a toy.   drop side crib doesn't bother me--ours was never recalled and works fine.  bumbo-i still used mine on a table and kept it even after it was recalled/pulled from shelves.

i also don't go all out to child proof my home either.  and my daughter rides her bike without a helmet-i know i live on the edge right?   seriously i'd rather my kids learn to do things safely than to have false sense of security or feel the need for a bubble.

I don't think it was recalled, but someone gave it to their kid while they were in the car, and the kid shoved Sophie down their throat, ersumshit like that.

Agreed.  OP, is it just childrens toys, gear, medications, etc that you find stupid or it is all safety recalls? Like the constant food recalls and all those Toyotas last year for example?

yeah, safety recalls are stupid.  especially formula recalls.  Chemicals will toughen our kids up! Get 'em ready for the real world!

I don't understand statements like this. How hard is it to put a freaking helmet on your kid? Helmets aren't just there for some false sense of security - they prevent against head injuries.

Helmets - kind of a big deal.

Bragging that you don't do it - ridiculous.

I don't think safety recalls are stupid - they inform parents of potential dangers. It is up to us to process the information and decide how we feel about the item/danger.

Really, no helmet? You must be a cooler parent than me.  I am all for teaching your child to bike safely.  We bike every day.  We wear helmets because 'seriously' I would rather my kids not have a TBI.

According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (part of the Centers for Disease Control), bicycle helmets have been shown to reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85 percent.  The most frequent injury sites were the street (51.9%) and the home (42.3%), and the head was the part of the body most frequently injured (55.0%). None of the injured children were using a cycling helmet at the time of injury.

You don't live on the edge - you fell off the edge and live in stupidity. Seriously? It's parents like you that give biking parents a bad reputation. Go out and buy your kid a helmet and grow up.

We bike daily in the city and there's no freaking way that I would ever let my daughter ride without a helmet here. The culture is not exactly accepting of cyclists like it is in Europe.

Dumb, dumb, DUMB. Wearing a helmet is not having a false sense of security or putting your kid in a bubble. It's common sense.  I hope and pray that you never have an accident, if only for your child's sake.

    THIS x 1000.

I am guessing you don't use car seats or seat belts either, I mean just learn to drive your car safely, right?

Any parent that brags about letting their kid ride without a helmet is an idiot. End of story.
