Babies: 9 - 12 Months

We're all entitled to a poop question

So here's mine.

E has been straining to poop big time.  Like she crys and needs to be held while she tries to push it out.  I've been giving her prune puree everyday (which is weird for her since we do BLW) and I've been trying to give her prune juice everyday but she hates all sippys and barely gets 1/2 oz everyday.

We are new to formula (within the past month) and within the past 2 weeks switched to powder instead of RTF.  I went back to RTF and she's still having trouble.

What could be causing this and how else can I help her?

  • My uneducated guess would be the formula.  When we switched the babies from Up&Up normal to Up&Up sensitive, they went through about a two week period of the exact same thing.  It eventually worked itself out.

    Good luck!

  • Maybe try a gentle/sensitive formula? Also, until she gets used to the formula, maybe cut down on cheese, bananas, rice... or anything that she's eating that could back her up.

Also if she's not liking prunes, try apples and pears too. They help just as well, IMO.

  • I miss you on 6-9. That is all.

Oh, and to get things moving, we've always done an ounce of pear juice and an ounce of water in the bottle 2x's a day. :)

Just stay here.  Nobody will even notice.  Your kid sits up and everything.  You'll blend right in!

She has a pear every morning for breakfast.  Maybe I'll trying Similac Sensitive.  Thanks!

  • you can also replace the water in the formula with diluted prune juice in one of her bottles. My pedi suggested the last of the day, but I do it in the first as my DD is a morning pooper.

  • Our Pedi has us do 2 oz of straight pear juice, then the next day add 2 oz - but never go over 7oz. We usually have success after 2oz, sometimes it takes the 2oz the next day too - so 4oz total. I try to give him peas and pears too - which it seems like you do :-). It may be the formula too - Bryce usually skipped a day with pooping if he has had a lot of formula the day before (for supplementing). So it may just be her body adjusting. Bananas definitely bind him up too. GL!

  • The powder formula constipated J at first too.  I just kept giving him the fruit puree and it all eventually balanced out.  (And now several months later his poops are a runny mess so I don't know wtf is going on with ours either.)
