What do you make for Christmas dinner?

We used to do turkey, but for the past 3-4 years it's been a standing rib beef roast. Sides are roasted or mashed potatoes, a couple of green veggies, and gravy.

I may make popovers this year instead of the potatoes.

Re: What do you make for Christmas dinner?

  • Nothing.  We have a big breakfast, then just snacks/cold meat/soup the rest of the day.

For our family get-togethers, we're having pizza for one and chili/hot dogs for the kids at the other.  Nothing fancy.  My MIL will make a mis-mosh of ham/potatoes/greens/mac 'n cheese on Christmas Eve.

  • Christmas Eve is oyster stew (plus another soup), homemade breads and heavy apps.Christmas day is usually the traditional dinner, but this year I'm hosting and we are doing a mexican-theme.

In earlier years the meat varies (turkey, ham, sometimes ribs), mashed potatoes, corn, roasted root veggies, green salad and some jell-o mold salad with marshmallows, homemade buns.

  • We have our fancy dinner on Christmas Eve and then just do soup on Christmas.  Our big dinner is:

    Lobster Thermidor

    Filets with brandy cream sauce

    Savory cranberries

    Homemade rolls

Brussels sprouts with vanilla/pecan butter and pomegranite seeds

I am going to do a chocolate bread pudding for dessert this year.  We switch off between different kinds of bread pudding.  Last year we did a chocolate pecan pie.  Not sure what kind of soup we'll do on Christmas this year, but in the morning, we will be having PW's breakfast burritos!

  • My family does pot luck.  This year, my sister is making prime rib and fried turkey.  Sides from others include rice pilaf, potatoes au gratin, roasted vegetables, green beans with bacon and shallots, fresh bread and salad.  I'm making two desserts, chocolate mousse cake and mini chocolate lava cakes.  My sister is making a pie.
  • We go to my MIL's on Christmas Day and she usually makes beef. We do my parents' on Christmas Eve and have a traditional Slovak meal.
  • Beef tenderloin, potatoes, veggies. I am tempted to do italian though this year, depends how much sticker shock I get at Costco when I go to buy the beef....
  • We normally do beef tenderloin, twice baked potatoes, salad, croissants, and chocolate and raspberry cake.  This year I think we are doing steak instead of the tenderloin.

  • I don't make anything other than a side dish for my mom's.

On CE - we go to my MIL's and have shrimp, lobster, and apps

On CD - we go to my mom's and we have ham, sweet and sour cabbage, potato salad, veggies, sweet potatoes, mac and cheese

  • How do you eat the popovers?

I love my mom's popovers but we always eat them for breakfast with jam and honey.

  • Either just buttered or with the gravy from the roast.

My parents doesnt make a big dinner since the extended family all come and go at different times.  She does a hot & cold appetizers buffet.

My SIL does a rib roast complete with all the trimmings.

  • All I have to make is an appetizer and a side to share. I believe the main course is ham - I know we will have scalloped potatoes, some sort of veggie, and rolls.

Christmas day will be just the 4 of us. We will make my MIL's pancake recipe for brunch with fruit and bacon, and chili probably for dinner.

  • My ILs do the same as Thanksgiving (turkey and ham). My parents have either filet mignon or prime rib. YUM!

  • It's just us on Christmas and we stay home. I find that when it's just us I'm less motivated to make a huge feast. That being said, I'll probably make a turkey this year since I have three of them hogging up space in my freezer. I'm thinking turkey, potatoes, homemade foccacia w/roasted garlic and some kind of green veggie. Apple tart or something similar for dessert. Still nice but relatively simple without a zillion side dishes.

In the past I've made a beef tenderloin or prime rib, but this year those turkeys need to be eaten!

  • Wedge salads

    Filet mignon roast
    Twice-baked potatoes
    Seasoned green beans

    Bread pudding with caramel sauce
    chocolate candy

    Egg nog
    Champagne

    Is it Christmas yet???

ETA:  Forgot ... appetizer platter with brie, crackers, grapes, pomegranate seeds, nuts and slices/pieces of aged cheddar cheese

  • It's always just us for Christmas Day, so we keep it simple. I pick out some kind of nice steak and then make twice baked potatoes, jello salad, and a hot veggie. This year I may switch it up and make a German dish that DH and I really like. We are missing our family, so some comfort food may be nice for Christmas.

  • It's just us as always (1050 miles away from home)  so we bought a small turkey breast and we will eat basically Thanksgiving for Christmas.

Christmas Eve we always order pizza, watch movies,  and make yummy treats like cookies and chocolate covered pretzels.
