Jaundice

My little guy has jaundice. It's not bad but something to keep an eye on. For those in the same boat, how long did your LO have it and was there anything you did to help speed the process along? He's feeding really well, but I'm still considering supplementing with formula until it is completely gone. Would you?

Re: Jaundice

  • Lo had a little Jaundice and it has started to clear up in the last few days. I am only breastfeeding but I wouldn't supplement unless your Dr. has told you too.

  • I agree, I wouldn't supplement unless your dr advises you to, however I did supplement my LO bc he was being watched for jaundice as well. I made that decision as a nurse, but when I told my dr she said that was the best choice. The more they poop the more bilirubin is excreted from their bodies. Now we use 100% breastmilk and have had no issues from using formula just for a few days in the beginning.
  • DS had a moderate case of jaundice.  He was born in July so we did our best to keep him in the sun.  We did suppliment with formula while we were at the hospital, but I didn't give him a bottle there.  We used a syringe and my pinky finger.

When we got home he did have to be on the lights for a couple days which was soooo hard, but he didn't seem to mind!

  • Wyatt was a level 5 at his 1 week check up. I can still see it in the whites of his eyes when he looks to the sides but otherwise, it's gone from his skin and most of his eyes.

I won't supplement just to get rid of what's left. That seems silly to me- I know he's healthy and it's not hurting him. BF babies can take up to 1 month to fully get rid of the jaundice.

  • Nathan has it too :( he was at 14.7 at his appt yesterday and he was 5 days old, if he gets to 15 we have to start the therapy but the dr wasnt worried about it getting worse.  We have been supplementing with the formula after bfing.  As soon as it is gone the formula will be out and it will be purely breast.

  • Eli had jaundice and was sent home from the hospital with the bili lights.  It's been difficult getting used to nursing him and having him around the house while connected to a machine.

We did supplement with formula for day 3 and 4 and have stopped since my milk came in and he has been feeding more from me.  Since his BM's are VERY HEALTHY (lol!)  the doc said to stop supplementing.  LO has had no problem going back and forth between breast and bottle.  Today (day 5 for him)  his numbers were down for the 2nd day in a row so we are in the clear!  yay!

  • griffin has a mild case of jaundice.  i see it in the white of his eyes, his cheeks, nose and chest.  they told me to breastfeed every 2 hrs to make him poop and pee more and its helped.  he was born at 6lb 6 oz and left the hospital the next day at 6lb 2 oz.  then 2 days later he weighed 5lb and thats when they told me to breastfeed more often.  griffin just got weighed today and hes at 6lb 5oz!  basically back at his birth weight!  the nurse told me it usually takes 2 wks for babies to get back to their birth weights and griffin only took days.  so considering hes been pooping and peeing tons and i have an abundant supply of breast milk, they said theyre not concerned at all about the jaundice.
  • Ava is slightly yellow in her face and upper chest but the lower half has normal coloring. She's one day behind your little guy. I wouldn't supplement unless the doctor suggests it. I was thinking about asking at our appointment Tuesday but figured the doctor would bring it up if he thought it was serious. We have a follow up appointment tomorrow to check her weight but he said if she looks like a banana from head to toe then we'll go get labs drawn to see where her levels are.

  • My LO had a slight case when we were leaving the hospital at 2 days old (his number was a 9...). The doc wanted us to supplement 4 oz of formula per day until she told us to stop.  I also had him in the sun in my living room on the floor for a total of about 40 minutes a day. We went today for a check up (6 days old) and she said he's cleared enough to stop supplementing now. I would never have supplemented without her telling me to and am so glad that he's better now! Good Luck!

  • skin-to-skin helps with jaundice.  i would not use formula unless the dr. says to because it can cause constipation, and the best and fastest way to get rid of jaundice is poop and pee Stick out tongue
  • Both of my LO's have been jaundiced. With DS1 his numbers were high and we ended up using a biliblanket at home and then being readmitted to use the bilibed. he was jaundiced for 2 weeks.(13 days)

with DS2, his levels were lower so we were able to leave without the biliblanket. The dr told me that I should supplement. We told them absolutely not. Going through it with DS1, we had learned that while it does usually take a breastfeeding baby a little longer to pass the bilirubin, they are at no greater risk of the high levels than a FF baby. Many doctors see supplementing as an easy fix since it may concentrate the baby's stool ( and bile which is where the bilirubin is) but it is not an actual treatment for jaundice. Phototherapy is the only proven treatment, so we went with the standing of: If it is not neccesary to give phototreatment ( which they only will above certain levels due to it's own risks) than there is no need to use trial treatments especially since we already had issues with latching. He was tested ( heal prick) daily for 10 days and was still a little jaundiced at that point but the levels had steadily been declining which was sufficient enough for the dr.'s to stop the testing.

We were told that the average jaundiced breastfed baby is jaudiced 2.5 weeks. A jaundiced FF baby is rarely jaundiced for more than 2 weeks.
  • Nalani has jaundice and her levels are currently rising (she's only 4 days), but they are rising within the limits and hopefully will go down in the next few days.

we supplemented formula one night until my milk came in, but she's been breastfeeding ever since and having regular wet and dirty diapers.

We are getting a bilibed delivered tonight, since the doctor says that's the quickest way to get rid of it.

    We'll see how it goes!
