Isn't that the same thing? 4.5 months means you finished month 4 and are halfway through with month 5. Unless I am not getting it either, which is entirely possible!!
4.5 Months is 4 and 1/2 months, not 4 months and halfthrough through month 5. ( it is halfway through month 4 though!)
Op:
you are 4 1/2 months pregnant at 18 weeks. 20 weeks is 5 months, 24 weeks is 6 months, 28 weeks is 7 months, and so on.
18 divided by 4 weeks= 4.5 months.
At least thats how I've been taught to do it!!
i disagree. We are pregnant for 40 weeks or 9 months. So at 20 weeks we would be 4 1/2 months. 4.5x2 = 40.
Some websites go based on the 4 weeks in a month thing but a real month has more than 4 weeks.

The bolded is not correct. At 4.5 months you have completed a full 4 months plus 1/2 month, that's why there is an "and" in there.
If you go by each month having 4 weeks, then we are pregnant for 10 months (40 divided by 4 = 10 months). It would also mean that there are 13 months in a year (52 divided by 4 = 13).
To figure out how many months you are, count backwards from your due date. So for me, my due date is May 11 so April 11 I will be 8 months, March 11 will be 7 months, and so on.

I do something similar to this - I count the months from my LMP. So that was July 15th so I am just over 5 months (at 22 weeks)

4.5 months pregnant is the same as being in your fifth month. Just as you are in your first year of life before you turn one, you are in your fifth month before you turn five months pregnant.
It's the same as your birthday... I'm 28 currently, as in, I have completed 28 years... I am in my 29th year. As in, I am still only 28!!
So if you're 4.5 months pregnant, you have completed that many months but you are technically in your 5th month!!
exactly! that was my reasoning too. Like pp said... it is not that difficult. Or at least it shouldn't be! If anyone is still confused, try this https://www.baby2see.com/pregnancylength.html

Your backwards counting is wrong too!
I'm due March 22. So according to the backwards counting, Feb 22- 8 months, Jan 22- 7 months, Dec 22-6 months. BUT I'm already 6 months. In fact, starting week 27, I'm 7 months. I'll be 27 weeks next Tuesday...which is a full month away from the "backwards count 7 months" as Jan 22.
THIS is why I insist on telling people in weeks. And when they say, "But how many months is that?" I tell them that pregnancies are stated in weeks, not months.
Wow. First, 40 weeks does not = 9 months, it = 10 months. We say you are pregnant for 9 months because the first month doesn't really count (generally you find out you are pregnant at about 4 weeks, and the 9 months starts there.)
Just count your pregnancy in weeks, the month really doesn't matter.

Dear lord. Hi, who here goes by lunar months? If so, then sure 4 weeks= 1 month. This debate is so friggin ridiculous- and to the poster who refuses to tell people how many months she is: google "pregnant women are smug."
OP, if you know your LMP is is so easy! Just count the months it's been since then. Also, "in your fifth month" is the same as 4.5 months.
Ladies, just because you wanna sound like you're further along doesn't make you further along. Your baby is coming at the same time no matter what shiz you're spewing.

While I am perfectly capable of reading a calender and also perfectly capable of knowing what week/day I am in my pregnancy, the rest of the world (except for those women who were recently pregnant) looks at me with a blank look of confusion when I say "I'm in my xth week." They want to know months. So of course you can just ignore them and say - I'm in my xth week, or you can try to be accommodating and tell them what month you're in. According to my Mayo Clinic book, I am in the 2nd week of my 5th month (that lasting from weeks 17-20, according to them). However, that means that I will have 10 months of pregnancy, which the rest of the world does not understand.
I also would like to point to the previous posters who have noted that calender months don't have only 4 weeks (28 days), as is assumed by my Mayo book and several websites, apparently. So for the rest of the world, I think of when my LMP was and count the months from there. It was Aug 20 = I'm at the very end of my 4th month for the world at large. For reading up on what's going on with my baby in my book I'm in my 5th, and for my doctor and myself I'm just starting my 18th week.
For all those rolling their eyes and making snide comments about how easy it is, I would think from this post it would be clear that it is not always that easy to keep track of the different ways of counting. My suggestion - let's switch the world over to counting in weeks :-)

how is 4.5 months still month 4? Here's how I'm figuring:
weeks 1-4 = month 1
weeks 5-8 = month 2
weeks 9-12 = month 3
weeks 13-16 = month 4
weeks 17-20 = month 5
So she's have finished month 4 and be in month 5 at 4.5 months/18 weeks. What am I not getting lol?

when you are figuring out a month it is 4.3 weeks.... that might help!
There's a really good reason pregnancy is measured in WEEKS... this is it. You're 18 weeks, problem solved.
