Do I NEED a baby book? Who has one?

So I didn't receive a baby book for the shower, (I didn't register for one) and I was just thinking about it today. In your opinion, should I purchase one? How many of you ladies have them, how many don't and aren't getting one?

Re: Do I NEED a baby book? Who has one?

  • I didn't receive one either, but I would like one and am planning to get one.  My mom kept all of ours and looking back through them when I was young was special.  My vote is yes.

  • I bought one.  I really enjoy filling it out.  I loved looking at my own baby book when I was a kid.
  • Got one for my shower. I like it, but I never had one, or many baby pictures, so maybe I just don't want my daughter to be deprived. lol

IDK how well I'll keep up with it though, to be honest. I'm bad about stuff like that.

  • My mom and I started to scrapbook one. I think it is up to you if you really want or need one. I am hoping to keep with it and put pictures and things in there, but we will see how that goes.

  • I didn't even think about it until this post.  It's really not my style.  My Mom had one for me and she had enough time to fill out about 3 pages.  I don't even know if she still has it.  My kid will be well documented, I don't think it needs to be in a book necessarily.

  • If I were you I would get one, even if it's a small simple one. You don't realize how easy it is to forget until the time is gone (lack of sleep plays a huge factor in there too). Things like How old was he when he got his first tooth? How old was he when he started walking? What was his first real word? How did he react to his first taste of solid food? It's fun to go back and read some of it.

I know for the fist week home part I would have never remembered that it was so dark the first few days home because there was a huge storm coming through and rained for 4 days straight. But I wrote it down while it was fresh on my mind so I can look back and remember.

It's so easy to forget, trust me. I usually just write some things down on paper and go back and add them to my sons book at a later date.

I also find it neat looking at my baby book and seeing how my son compares to me on all his firsts.

  • Well of course you don't NEED one. I'm sure there is plenty of stuff that we are all buying or have been given that we don't really need but will be nice to have. With that being said I think a baby book is a nice way of documenting and would make for a great keepsake. You don't even have to do a traditional baby book, you could scrapbook or even just keep a journal and add pics or momentos to that.

I do plan on getting one and will probably order it through etsy.

  • We registered for a baby book but didn't receive it, so we bought it last week at BRU. My mom still has mine from when I was a baby, and I think it's really neat to look at! It seems like a good place to keep that sort of stuff together- 1st pics, hospital bracelet, footprints, etc.

  • I've had one since the beginning of the pg and have enjoyed filling it out.  I love being able to look through my baby book and DH is sad he doesn't have one anymore (lost it in a fire) so it was important to do for the both of us.  I think you should get one they are so great to look back through.

  • I do not have a baby book, but I started a journal with my thoughts, feelings, and anything else that I have been going though thoughout the pregnancy. I think it will be a great thing to hand to our child when she is old enough to appreciate it. I put some pictures in it. I love it!

  • I think it's kind of a nice keepsake. I looked at a few but I wasn't really into the filling in the blank books, some questions were just stupid (who cares who visited the hospital? Who cares who bought what onesie?)

Instead, I bought a blank scrapbook and some pretty patterned papers. Throughout my pregnancy, I've written some highlights that might be kind of cool for baby to read later. I plan on printing it out and putting it next to some bump shots and ultrasound photos. I also want to try and stay on top of writing down anecdotes and milestones in my own words each month and inserting a few shots of LO. I anticipate time being short so I've started to pre-make some of the monthly pages. By no means is it a super intricately decorated scrapbook, but it's definitely more personal.

  • My mom had one for me but didn't really keep it up. I remember looking at it and enjoying the few things she did write.

So, I bought one at Borders for our little peanut. It's pretty cool. It has a folder place to put momentos and a diy place to put pictures, so it's a lot easier than scrapbooking and still looks cute. I also journal so she will have that to look at when she's older.

  • I'm registered for one at BRU.  I too loved looking at my own baby book when I was a kid, and it just seems like a great keepsake.  I also like the scrapbook idea a couple of people have mentioned.  I personally am not that crafty so I know I'll be more likely to keep up with a baby book.  I think that if you have some spot to keep baby mementos and little notes on development, whether it's a baby book, a scrapbook, or just an old shoebox, you'll be glad you did.

  • Personally, I can't imagine not having one!

I try to write down and keep track of the funny little things that my boys say. And it is crazy how much I have forgotten. I'm not really into scrapbooking or anything else though.

  • I had a baby book with my DS, and my DD, and another one for this DD. I love them, I love most writing the letters to baby from mommy and daddy. It's funny, I have the letter written in all 3 books and DH hasn't even written in DS's yet and it's 4 yrs old now! LOL But I still like the family tree, writing down the experience of the pregnancy with that particular child, and putting in pics of me pregnant and newborn photos too. I saved my hospital bracelets with the last two babies and those are now in the baby book. :) Even if my kids never care to see it, I LOVE it!

  • My Mom kept one for me and I still love going back and looking through it! I already bought ours from rubylovedesigns on etsy. I love it! I've filled out as much as I can before she's born and will try very hard to keep up with it. For me it's a must.

  • I got one in my prenatal hospital diaper bag.  I love my hospital!!!  Anywho...I have totally slacked on keeping up with it and writing everything down. I'm just bad about that.  I hope to do better.

If you are a keepsake type of person then get one.  It will probably be a lot of fun for you.  but if you are like some of the rest of us, you may not have the time and you may enjoy documenting your childs life in other ways.

  • I don't have one but I am thinking of getting one this time around. We didn't for SD and I don't remember a darn thing about when she cut her first tooth, started crawling, took her first step...ect.

Time flies and it is really easy to forget 6 years down the road.

  • i registered for one, but we did not receive it. I bought it afterwards. To me it is important since my mother never wrote anything down of when I did what and she couldn't remember when I asked her. My first experience was in 8th grade home ec class when I handed in a homework sheet only 25% filled in. I want to remember when my children hit their milestones.
