My little guy has jaundice. It's not bad but something to keep an eye on. For those in the same boat, how long did your LO have it and was there anything you did to help speed the process along? He's feeding really well, but I'm still considering supplementing with formula until it is completely gone. Would you?

Re: Jaundice
Dx MTHFR (C677T & A1298C, Compound Heterozygous)
DS had a moderate case of jaundice. He was born in July so we did our best to keep him in the sun. We did suppliment with formula while we were at the hospital, but I didn't give him a bottle there. We used a syringe and my pinky finger.
When we got home he did have to be on the lights for a couple days which was soooo hard, but he didn't seem to mind!
Wyatt was a level 5 at his 1 week check up. I can still see it in the whites of his eyes when he looks to the sides but otherwise, it's gone from his skin and most of his eyes.
I won't supplement just to get rid of what's left. That seems silly to me- I know he's healthy and it's not hurting him. BF babies can take up to 1 month to fully get rid of the jaundice.
Eli had jaundice and was sent home from the hospital with the bili lights. It's been difficult getting used to nursing him and having him around the house while connected to a machine.
We did supplement with formula for day 3 and 4 and have stopped since my milk came in and he has been feeding more from me. Since his BM's are VERY HEALTHY (lol!) the doc said to stop supplementing. LO has had no problem going back and forth between breast and bottle. Today (day 5 for him) his numbers were down for the 2nd day in a row so we are in the clear! yay!
with DS2, his levels were lower so we were able to leave without the biliblanket. The dr told me that I should supplement. We told them absolutely not. Going through it with DS1, we had learned that while it does usually take a breastfeeding baby a little longer to pass the bilirubin, they are at no greater risk of the high levels than a FF baby. Many doctors see supplementing as an easy fix since it may concentrate the baby's stool ( and bile which is where the bilirubin is) but it is not an actual treatment for jaundice. Phototherapy is the only proven treatment, so we went with the standing of: If it is not neccesary to give phototreatment ( which they only will above certain levels due to it's own risks) than there is no need to use trial treatments especially since we already had issues with latching. He was tested ( heal prick) daily for 10 days and was still a little jaundiced at that point but the levels had steadily been declining which was sufficient enough for the dr.'s to stop the testing.
We were told that the average jaundiced breastfed baby is jaudiced 2.5 weeks. A jaundiced FF baby is rarely jaundiced for more than 2 weeks.

Nalani has jaundice and her levels are currently rising (she's only 4 days), but they are rising within the limits and hopefully will go down in the next few days.
we supplemented formula one night until my milk came in, but she's been breastfeeding ever since and having regular wet and dirty diapers.
We are getting a bilibed delivered tonight, since the doctor says that's the quickest way to get rid of it.
We'll see how it goes!
