Babies: 9 - 12 Months

C-section moms: Post-baby belly question

Hi girls,

I've had 2 kids vaginally, and I'm 31 weeks pregnant with LO #3. This baby is breech, and while I know there's still plenty of time for baby to turn, I've somehow convinced myself that he or she won't before the big day. My tummy has gone back to flat after each birth (I swear I'm not bragging--it's the one bright spot on a body with wiiiide hips, mosquito-bite boobs, ungodly amounts of cellulite, etc.).

In Hollywood, every woman who's had a c-section has a flat tummy again in 2 weeks (thank you tummy tuck), but every woman IRL has told me that it's impossible to lose a c-section pooch. I'm probably just hormonal, but It depresses me more than I can say that the one body part I actually like may be gone for good if I end up with one. So I thought I'd ask for stories on this board since it's been almost a year since you all have given birth: any c-section mamas whose bellies have returned to normal? Or even better, any mamas who've had both vaginal births and c-sections who didn't notice a difference?

Ugh...I hate that I'm so preoccupied with this...but thank you in advance for your input!

Re: C-section moms: Post-baby belly question

  • As being someone that's had 2 c-sections and about to have a third...the pooch is something you live with. I think if that's the worst thing about having a baby, I can deal with it.

It's not the end of the world and in your situation I would imagine it would be needed in an emergency situation. Not ideal but it's practical if the baby doesn't turn.

DH still thinks I'm sexy even with the pooch. To me? All that matters is I'm seen the same way in his eyes and my kids are ok. All else doesn't matter as much to me. But in the distance...I'm still hoping for that tummy tuck so maybe I'll be able to have the flat tummy I've never had before.

  • Not to brag, but my stomach is as flat as it was before.  I've just had one kid though, c/s.

    GL!  Hope your LO turns!

  • Most of my body, with the exception of the pooch at the bottom of my belly has returned to normal. I really don't think any amount of exercise is going to get it back into the same shape it was. I'm hoping, but I hate to say it that it doesn't look good. Everyone is different though, so you may be just fine!
  • DS was breeched until 35 weeks, I still had to have a c/s because he was born at 35 weeks due to pre-e and low amniotic fluid.

Eh, I've never had a flat stomach, it's always been my problem area, even when I was doing 1,000 crunches a day......and I still have the c/s fat flap Crying
  • Even though I am a couple of kilograms lighter now than when I first got pregnant, I still do have a bit of a belly pooch. However, it has subsided in the last couple of months with doing abdominal work and upping my cardio, so there may be some hope!

  • I don't think it really matters whether you deliver vaginally or by c-section, its all according to body type and skin elasticity. My sister and I have both had two c-sections each and her stomach is as flat as flat can be. Mine is not, but no matter how skinny I ever was before having kids (I never broke 100lbs before being pregnant), my stomach was never completely flat. I definitely have more of a pooch than I did before, but I don't think that is because I had c-sections, its just from my skin stretching.
  • I'm playing with the big girls today, and normally reside on 6-9, so this is from my 7 months out perspective... I still have a pooch. :(

However, I know many ladies who've had c-sections who look absolutely fabulous 9 months later. Case in point, my cousin-in-law who was rocking a bikini in Vegas 9 pp.

  • I was really overweight with DD and then lost a lot of weight before I got pregnant with DS. Both were C-sections and I have a pooch. I was really depressed about it until my OB said "Honey, you lost a lot of weight--your body shrank rapidly and then expanded again for baby #2. It's loose skin and it ain't going away unless you have plastic surgery. No need to be depressed over something you cannot change."

That may not help you. I have been working out like a fiend and have lost the weight portion of the baby weight, my legs are really tones and my arms are getting there. But since I was overweight most of my life I never experienced a flat stomach and I don't think it's going to happen. I won't ever wear a bikini but hey, I never had one so no loss there.

I'm a size 8/10 and short but I get compliments all the time on how great I look and how thin. I don't see it but others remember me at my over 200 lbs weight most of my life.

  • i had a c/s w/my ds but he's the only child i've had so far. my stomach is flat again. i worked out a lot. in the beginning i thought there was no chance but i just kept at it and i rocked a bikini this past summer and will do so again this coming summer. i did have a flat stomach beforehand so i knew it was possible to get back there.

my hope is that after #2 happens one day that i'll be able to do it again.

  • I have the c-section fat flap as well, but I have about 20 lbs to lose. Weight loss has not been my focus this year. With that being said, my stomach initially got flat (flatter) right away after having my LO. I just need to tone up and lose a little weight but something tells me that the "flap" will always be there.

    Good luck!

  • PP, I was a size zero, and at about 4 months pp I was able to get back into all of my size zero clothes.  I run and do abs religiously and when I'm wearing clothes my stomach is really flat. But, I swear I had a crappy surgeon because my entire stomach is tight except for the weird c-section indent/flap. It's so frustrating.  Also, my scar is still bright red and jaggedy and very high (not sure if it's because I'm petite), so I'm a little sad I can't really wear a bikini anymore unless I want to show the world my scar.  But, whatever.  When I'm fully clothed, no one can tell I had a c-section.

However, just because you've had 2 vaginal births, I would definitely try for the version. Ironically, I had a successfully version for my breech baby only to end up having a failed induction a few weeks later.

  • After I had the twins, I spent 3 hours a week doing vigorous workouts (on top of all the cardio and working out I did) and I managed to get my stomach flat again by 3.5 months PP. All the good it did....

  • If you have a flat tummy before, you can again. It is mostly genetic, like a PP said. My stomach is the same as it was pre-baby (I've just had 1 c/s). It is not totally flat but it never was. I have a slight indent above my incision scar, but I could wear a bikini and it would not be noticeable. The only reason I don't know if I will is the stretch marks!
