xp: Holding food in her mouth?

So lately when Allie eats dinner or a snack or anything, she holds the last bite of food, chewed up, in her mouth. Last night she held chewed up pasta in her mouth for 40 minutes.  She would not swallow or spit it out, I finally dug my finger in there and got it out.  Anyone else??? Advice??

  • My nephew used to do that, he just grew out of it. He was younger than Allie though, closer to 12months. He would leave it in his mouth for a long time then eventually chew & swallow.

  • Maddie used to do that a lot. She's gotten better about it, but still does it sometimes. And the frustrating thing is she doesn't know what "swallow" means, so if I tell her to swallow her food, she just puts MORE food in her mouth, until her mouth gets so full she gags. Fun times.

The only thing that I have found to work is offering her something she really likes to eat. If she won't swallow her sandwich, I give her some blueberries or a cookie. She'll swallow whatever is in her mouth real quick so that she can eat the food she loves.

  • Ha! Keira does this--mostly with chicken and bacon. I made breakfast the other morning and found chewed up bacon in her mouth and hour later when she decided to give it back to me. Stinker. I'm assuming she'll grow out of it. I try and have her take a final drink before getting up to make sure anything squirreled away in her cheeks is flushed out, but sometimes she really hides it back there and I can't tell! I always try and finger sweep her cheeks before nap or bed if I know it's a food she tends to keep in her mouth, just to avoid choking.

  • I've got the opposite problem, I can't get my child to put food IN her mouth!!
