Mini road trip- is it safe?

I think this is a crazy question, since obviously we all do all kinds of things while KO, but DH and I are planning to take a mini-road trip in a few weeks.  It would probably involve about 3 hours of driving each day for a few days-- I was wondering if anyone can confirm that this is fine to do?  I even feel like  a crazy person calling the OB with this question, but I'll take some extra reassurance anyway ;)  So, is road trip fine for baby?

Re: Mini road trip- is it safe?

  • You should be fine as long as you make stops to stretch your legs to prevent blood clots.  About 2 hours of sitting is a long as you should go at one time. (Advice per my midwife)

  • Yes.  Doctors usually advise not to go on trips longer than two hours away once you hit about 32 weeks (maybe later in some cases).

This.  My OB recommends walking around for 15-20 minutes every two hours.  It also may be a good idea to let your practitioner know that you'll be out of town and ask for your medical record so that you are prepared for an emergency.

  • As long as everything is going well, you should be fine. I am flying from NY or OR next week, and the doctor said it should not be an issue. I have also driven 4 hours to Canada and not had any issues.

    Have fun!

  • It should be fine. Like pp have said, make sure you stop and walk around every 2 hours or so. We took a road trip for Thanksgiving and did this. The two hour rule worked well since I had to pee that often anyway. :) The trip going out took about 8 hours and the trip coming home, due to traffic, was 12 hours.

My OB said that I can continue to travel until 34 weeks. I specifically asked because of a work trip that was originally planned for March and she said I was fine to go.

  • I just drove from Denver to Chicago, 15 hours each way and was fine.  I had to remember to keep rolling my ankles and shifting my weight otherwise my ankles would swell.  I had no other problems (other then the ridiculous amount of bathroom breaks)  If you're concerned check with your OB, they have gotten all types of questions, nothing is too ridiculous for them.
  • I took two road trips last time and it was fine.  One was 5 hours each way at 25 weeks and the other was 6 hours each way (maybe 7) at 32 weeks.  Just take breaks and I did ankle rolls in the car.

  • I drove 5 hours each way last week for work. Alone. I stopped a couple times to pee and stretch. I wasn't concerned, and I had no reason to be. It was all fine.

Wear your seat belt! Driving is actually about the most risky thing we do as pregnant women. Much more risk than eating at Subway. Wink

  • Agree with everyone else - Im driving from South Florida to Upstate NY (about 1300 miles) next week for Christmas.  Just going to stop every two hours to stretch (and let the dog and me pee).
