Canadian adoption

Anyone here from Canada, that adopted successfully?

Did you adopt through province or another method?

Re: Canadian adoption

  • There is one gal on here that adopted from Canada--I think it was more like a kinship/foster to adopt situation.  I can't remember her screen name though.

  • We are in Canada. Miss J is not adopted... yet. The future plans are to adopt her or get private guardianship if she is not available to adopt.

We have friends who adopted their foster daughter, cousins who adopted through an agency, a friend who did international adoption of an African American baby from the USA,  and also one former friend who had her DD adopted after her child was in the foster care system.

  • I am in Alberta too.  We haven't adopted yet, but DH and I hope to one day adopt from foster care.

This is the Government of Alberta children and youth services website, and it has a fair amount of information about adopting from foster care.  It also has information about requirments for international adoption.  I am not sure but it may have some links for adoption agencies if you are interested in domestic infant adoption.

    Good luck.

  • We adopted DD from Canada from the foster system in the BC province.

We were named to adopt DD so that is why we got to adopt her because the family named us and would not have let DD be adopted otherwise. They treated it like a regular adoption not a kinship but it was very hard and took forever. My understanding is that if you adopt from your province it is much easier. I would call and ask.... I did lots of asking before we got things rolling and everyone was very nice, some were more helpful than others.

  • We are on the waiting list for adoption with a private agency in Alberta.
  • what is the private agency and what are your reasons for private, cost etc? Thanks

  • We are with Adoption Options- they operate out of Edmonton and Calgary.

Chose them because they handle most of the private adoption in Alberta- larger than any of the others.  Also know of a few people that adopted through them and had good things to say.

Cost, they say roughly base $10,000 for domestic adoption.  Not including fees such as social worker travel time, lawyers fee, private hospital room for the birthmother, update to homestudy...
