9-month old waking at night?

Evan has been an excellent sleeper (at night) for the past few months but for the past 4 nights he has started crying off an on for at least an hour. It is a kind of moan/cry and he seems like he is still partially asleep.

We don't go in to check on him because that just wakes him up and it makes the crying much worse. We watch him in the video monitor and we check the temperature in his room. He is okay and he eventually falls back to sleep.

He goes down to sleep without a problem and then starts crying around 1:00 am. Any ideas what this may be? Did any of you experience this? The lack of sleep is really starting to get to us.

TIA!

  • He may be teething...DD does this sometimes and I just equate it to teething or having a bad dream...or sometimes they just cry out in their sleep.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking too. There are too many possibilities and none of which we can really do anything about. We'll keep watching the monitor to make sure he is okay, but DH learned his lesson about going in to try to soothe him. Man, did that back fire.

  • DD does this as well from time to time around midnight - 1AM.  She's over a year now, but is cutting a lot of teeth so may be that..not sure.  The first few times she did it, I went in and rocked her, etc. but it seemed to wake her up more.  Now I just leave her alone and watch her on the monitor and usually she just puts herself back to sleep pretty quickly.  Like most things baby, I think this is just another phase that will pass.
  • at 9 months I was still nursing him at night [I know, I know - bad, bad] He started waking more and everyone was telling me it was teething, dreams - all that. It eventually worked it's self out but we were really tired for a few weeks there.
  • Is he eating anything out of the ordinary that might be upsetting his stomach?

What kind of jammies is he wearing?  Could he be getting too hot or too cold?  Do you use a humidifier?  I use a diffuser/humidifier every night (especially this time of year when we turn the heater on) because I think it dries the air out too much and could be giving him headaches.  (this could be far fetched but it seems to work for us.)

Good luck, lack of sleep is rough when you're not used to waking up anymore!

Ditto. She wakes about 1 am and sometimes around 4 am but goes back to sleep in anywhere from 10-40 minutes. Usually she wakes just the one time and we think it's teething but it seems it's a 9 month fun milestone!

Sounds like it. He cut 2 teeth (he is up to 6 total) and has 2 more on the way. But since he has been teething non-stop since he was 4 months old, he usually doesn't wake up. Maybe these just hurt more.
