NBR: stupid ? about newspaper deliveries

This is our first time subscribing to the paper, so I'm not sure what the etiquette is supposed to be here. But I noticed a Christmas card on our dining table with only one name and address on the right bottom corner on the envelope and I asked MH about it--he said it was tucked inside our newspaper. So I assume it's from our newspaper deliverer? And that one address is his address? (At first I thought that he was sending a card out to someone else and accidentally got it stuck in our paper.) What do you do? Send a Christmas card to that address? Or with a gift card or something to thank them for delivering the paper?

  • Funny....we were just talking about this at lunch at work today!

While I support tipping of gifting people who service you at the holidays, I find this practice tacky.  From what I understand (and correct me if I'm wrong, this is what I was told today from several other people), usually they aren't supposed to accept tips at their job (though people to tip all the time at the holidays anyway), as per many people's work policy.  So sometimes they sneak their address in so that you'll mail them a tip/gift at the holidays privately.  Like I said, I do tip our mailman (who does a great job and delivers crazy amounts of packages for us this time of year), but I really don't like it when people solicit tips in general.  I'll tip when I feel someone has done a particularly good job, given excellent service, or in some other way given a little extra....that's what tips are for, after all!

Oh! Haha, I'm so dense. I totally didn't see it as him sneaking his address in, trying to solicit tips =P I guess I thought that if etiquette says not to tip, then I was just gonna send him a card? I figured that's what the address was there for. Then again, I was dense enough in the first place to think that he had a card for someone else (since the address that was written is in the "to" area of the envelope) that accidentally dropped into our paper and that maybe I should stick a stamp on it and mail it out for him =P lol
