Vaccine Advice

We are due to get our first round of vaccines tomorrow.  Any advice?

Re: Vaccine Advice

  • Get them.  That's the only advice.

  • Have the bottle/boob ready and a bottle of infant Tylenol for AFTER the immunizations.

  • Realize that it isn't necessarily going to be horrible. I was all ready to nurse him and comfort him, but he was done crying by the time they handed him back to me. We didn't give tylenol before hand either, because the pedi said not to put their liver though it if it's not needed. He did great and didn't need it. He was his normal smiley self by the time we got home.

  • It'll be harder on you than it will be on them! Lots of kisses and cuddles initially, and infant Tylenol if they get a fever. Giving it beforehand can actually decrease the efficiency of the vaccine.
  • all of this!

get the vaccines, don't give tylenol beforehand but have it on hand in CASE they get a fever (I didn't and had to run around the CVS with an exhausted baby in tow) and hope that it's not as bad as you fear -- my baby screamed for a minute but then actually smiled at the nurse before she left.

  • Yes to everything PPs said.

Get the vaccines, I am not even going to get started on that hot button topic.

Ky was so over it by the time we left the office. She slept almost all day and only woke up to eat.....she was not a holy terror screaming mess all day

Do NOT give Tylenol beforehand, studies have shown it can make vaccines less effective and the way I look at it would you take a pain pill if you thought you MIGHT get a headache?

Do have it ready for afterwards just in case they spike a fever.

  • Don't worry.  Your kid could be like mine and scream for the initial poke, take a long nap, then be back to his normal self.

I was prepped for the worse after reading up on it and it was not even close to as bad as I thought it would be.

I did have an irrational fear that he would be mad at me if he saw me when they poked him. I hid behind the doctor so R would be mad at her.

  • Bring a bottle (or your boobs, or paci) to comfort your LO. DD screamed for like 10 mins before she stopped completely, and the nursing helped.

Do not give Tylenol before.. it's not a good idea to pre-medicate. You may not need to at all anyway, DD didn't have a fever or any side effects at all really.
