Question for moms who have breast fed

I was reading the bfing article that someonee posted about. Can any moms who have bfed before tell me if this is true? (the part in bold i mean)

"Not only is breastfeeding the right choice for your baby, it will benefit you in more ways than you can imagine! Not only is it FREE, but your menstrual cycle will (for most people) not return until after you stop breastfeeding. So if you got too used to not having to deal with that every month, here is a great way to keep it away just a little while longer. Keep in mind though, that even if you are not menstruating or ovulating regularly during this time, it is by no means a reliable birth control method"

Re: Question for moms who have breast fed

  • Not entirely. If your baby is eating every 3 hours, round the clock, then typically, yes. I didn't have mine until about 8 months PP, when DD dropped some of her feedings at night. Some women get it back after 2 months! It's just different for every woman

  • Mine came back when my daughter was 11 months old...I breastfed for another month but at that point, she was eating so much solid food that she wasn't taking that much milk. Oh it was glorious to not have a period for that long. And of course, don't count on that as birth control b/c you have no idea when yours will return. When it did come back it wasn't regular at first and then my cycles were annoyingly short (24 days). Of course...then I got pg again :)
  • I've actually read several times that BF is a decent source of birth control IF your baby is feeding regularly, if you haven't gotten your period yet, and only up to 6 months. I think thats pretty interesting too, even if its not as reliable as condoms or the pill.

  • It's different for every woman, I haven't had one since February 2009.

ETA: I also got pregnant while BFing!

  • Different for every woman.  I had friends who didn't get theirs back until 8-12 months later.  Mine was back 5 months pp, and I was exclusively bfing!  ::sigh:: oh well.  My cycles were so much more regulated and less painful though (after a lifetime of ridiculousness) so I couldn't complain too much.

  • Don't count on it for birth control if you really don't want another kid.  That's how my sister has number 2.
  • A very important note.. You can still need to use birth control.. Alot of people think you can't get preg. while BF.. but you can so be careful..

  • I thnk this reflects the experiences of a lot of BF mom's however, it was not true for me.  I EBF (I mean no bottles since she refused them) for 17 months and my period came back like clockwork 9 weeks after I delivered DD. And she was still feeding every 1 1/2 to 2 hours round the clock at that point.

  • Mine did not return until after I was done nursing...but then again my post-p bleeding lasted 6 weeks with DS!!

  • I didn't get mine until I started back on BCP at 8wks PP. If I did not start the pill then I would not have started my cycle again.

  • I have a friend who ended up with #3 12 months after #2 was born (in other words, got pregnant when #2 was 3 months old) despite breastfeeding.  So, yeah... this just echoes what others were saying... every woman is different.
  • I got mine back when I started weaning DS, he was about 12 months.

  • Not for me. :(  K was eating round the clock, never took a pacifier or a bottle, and I still got it back, regular as ever, at 10 weeks pp.  I'm very fertile- I ovulated 14 days after my loss at 22 weeks.
  • I exclusively bf for the first six months and she weaned at 15 months. I had periods, irregular though. But I had a hard time to remember to take my pill at the same time every day and you have to take it within the same hour every day. The progesterone only pill, which is the only kind they would let me take while BFing.

However, my mom never had a period while BF - and she had four kids.

As said before, every woman is different.

  • I only BF for 3 months, but it was true for me- it didn't return until about 6 weeks after I stopped.

  • I am one of the freaks that didn't get my cycles back until I weaned DD at 17 months.  Even though we were only doing one night feeding, I was still infertile.  I weaned, got my period back two weeks later, got pregnant two weeks later, had a miscarriage two weeks later and then got pregnant two weeks after that with this baby (ok hopefully that math is right!)  I have gone almost 3 years with only one period.
  • My period came back 4 weeks after pp bleeding stopped all three times. I also gain weight when I bf so do not think that you will lose weight just because you bf. I bf for a year with each boy.

    Just FYI

I know someone in the exact same situation. So, be careful! It's really not good for your body to have babies so close together (doesn't allow enough time to replenish nutrients, heal and tone muscles, etc.).

  • Mine came back when DS was about two months old--- so about 8-10 weeks postpartum.  I think it depends a lot on your body.
