I consider it a full name...and a very lovely one! It would have been on our name list if our cat wasn't named Mia already (side note, mia is how Portuguese people say how a cat meows....and thats why I named her Mia)

I'm obliged to think of it as a NN since I've been using it as a NN since I was 13 for my best friend but in recent years, it has very quickly become a popular stand alone name. Though, I speak Italian and Mia means my/mine in Italian...

It can be fine as a stand-alone name, and is actually currently in the top 10 as such(ranked #10 for girls in 2009), but also works well as a nn for Amelia, Maria, etc, as PPs have noted.
