Anyone have anything to tell me about McGuire AFB and/or the surrounding area? I know nothing about it- DH is in the USMC and may go there to help the reserve squadron. Thanks

I used to live on Lakehurst Naval Base before it became part of the McGuire/Dix/Lakehurst joint base thing. Can't think of anything on the top of my head, what do you want to know?

To PP: can you tell me anything about base housing? And where are the "good" places to live, town-wise, off base? I found some info on Cherry Hill- is that too far a commute from McGuire?

We PCs'd from McGuire in February and I grew up in the area. We lived right by Cherry Hill and DH had about a 45 minute commute. I worked in Philly then Camden and it was very close for me. We loved being near all the shopping and restaurants. If you live close to base you won't have that. We also lived far enough from base that all of our (DD and mine) healthcare was off-base.
The area closer to base is more hit or miss. There are some sketchy neighborhoods and school systems. A lot of the area right by base is pretty rural too, at least by Jersey Girl standards.
On base housing is beautiful! They just built all new houses all of the old ones are being torn down to make way for all of the new ones, they are constantly being built. Cherry Hill is probably about 45 minutes away from base and speaking as someone who currently lives 30 minutes off in the opposite direction that may feel far if you like to have any on base involvement. We are actually moving on base next year even though we like the area we live in. Our support system and the things we need like the commissary, MTF, DH's work are all their so we end up spending crazy amounts of gas to get back and forth. I know a bunch of people who live in Mt Holly but like the girl above me said around base can be pretty hit or miss and it is very rural if you are from a metropolitan area.
Holy cow. I would not live in Cherry Hill. The traffic that place sees in the afternoons is insane. I have driven there many times around rush hour, and I can tell you that you'd be stuck, stuck, stuck in slow-moving traffic quite often. We live in Lumberton, and I would not live any farther west than that. Before we moved out, people were suggesting places like Mt. Laurel, Cherry Hill, and nearby areas to those places, but, for ME, I could not justify spending two hours of my day commuting back and forth to work. It just isn't worth it. It already takes me 30 minutes in the morning to drive from our house in Lumberton to my building on base.
You can live on base, but the cons are that you are pretty far from "civilization." It's quite the trek to reach shopping centers, malls, movies, culture, restaurants, etc. (Just to give you an idea of how far base really is from everything, we live 30 minutes west of base, like I said above, and we still drive an additional 15-20 minutes west from us just to reach groceries, Target, movies, etc.) It really depends what your priorities are, though. Some people would rather be close to work on a daily basis, which makes sense. However, we felt that base was so far out from everything convenient that we wouldn't have enjoyed it. Like others were saying, though, base has some new housing that is pretty decent, but the old housing is still there, so it's a gamble with what you may get.
Yeah holy cow is right. I live on base and it sucks to find a decent walmart that stays open past 10pm. I hate the commute and its hard to find any people to be friends with.
We live in Manchester, which is also 30 minutes from the base just to the east. The pluses are though that we are much closer to stores, malls and restaurants. We are also only 10 minutes from the beach. I will definitely miss all of that when we move but with #3 on the way and the boys needing to start school we need to.
