Getting rid of the paci?

So, DS only uses his paci at night - how do I get rid of it?  Just go cold turkey?  He doesn't have a lovey that he favors - I've tried, but nothing attracts him.

Re: Getting rid of the paci?

  • We got rid of ours last week. DD had the soothie kind and we cut the tip off and when she went to put it in when we rocked in the chair she looked at me and held it out. I told her it broke. I told her the binky fairy thought she was a big girl and broke it. She just said "oh". She asked "binky broke mommy?" again a few minutes later but just hugged her little mermaid stuffed doll and that was that. She woke a few times around 5am the next few days when DH was getting ready and she was jammed up on one side of the crib... But she would have lost the binky by then anyway so I went in and rocked her a minute or two and put her back down. Downside: I think her canine teeth are coming soon so that might suck without a binky.

  • We went cold turkey at 18 mos. By then, DD only had hers in her crib, and in the car. It went surprisingly well. She didn't have a word for it at that point, so she never really asked for it. She was restless the first week or so when trying to go to sleep, but otherwise, it was pretty painless. GL!

  • We did it cold turkey.  There were a couple rough days, but it really wasn't that bad.  And he actually started sleeping MUCH better at night as soon as the paci was gone.
  • we did it last week.  started with poking holes in it then moved on to gradually cutting the tip off.  She was done with it in 2 days.

  • We went cold turkey. The first few nights were rough, but then he was fine. He actually started sleeping longer, which could be a coincidence.

  • Our guy was super paci addicted, and we tried cold turkey... he screamed for it until he puked, so we gave up. Tried again in a couple of weeks, and did it this way:

I thought if we got him involved in getting rid of the pacifier, he'd know exactly where it went and would accept it a bit easier. He'd become fascinated with garbage cans and garbage trucks, so one night I brought him a little garbage can with a clean liner and told him that the garbage man was coming the next day to take all of his binkies since he was a big boy. I brought him 6 pacifiers and asked him if he wanted to throw them in the garbage for the garbage man. He thought it was a fun game until it came to the last binky (which was still in his mouth). It took some convincing, but he finally did it. I took the garbage can out of his room and told him I gave it to the garbage man to put in his garbage truck. He said "binky all gone mommy?" When I said yes, he got sad, but had accepted what we had just done. He needed a little extra TLC during bed/nap time for the next few days and asked for it - but would immediately say "binky all gone garbage truck" after he asked for it. Anytime he saw a garbage can or garbage truck for the next couple of weeks, he said "all gone binky - bye bye". I think the key for us was to show him where it was going so that he didn't think we just took it from him for the heck of it. Not sure anything else would have worked for us.

     Good luck!

  • So, I don't need to be in any rush to get rid of it if he only uses it at night?  He doesn't use it in the car unless he's going to fall asleep, and he doesn't wake up when he spits it out.
