Two Under 2

do/did you bring the older one to OB apps?

Just curious if anyone brought their older child to their OB appointments and how you managed that?  I don't really have anyone to watch him at home (except for my crazy MIL, but I can't stand that crazy biitch).  DH came with me to the first 2, but he can't keep coming to every single appointment.  He definitely does not sit still and I don't think he would like to be confined to a stroller, but I suppose that's my only option!

Re: do/did you bring the older one to OB apps?

  • Yes, I've brought DS to OB appointments with me. He doesnt sit still well, but I bring toys for him to play with and old magazines he can rip to keep him entertained. If DH cant make the appointment to watch him while the dr checks me out, a nurse will come in and pay attention to DS.

  • Yes I almost always had to take dd #1 with me to my appts.  I just kept her in the stroller and made sure I had a snack and/or toys to keep her occupied for the time of the actual appt.
  • I took DD to one appointment with me, she hates her stroller and does NOT sit well but the nurses entertained her for the few minutes that the Dr. needed to see me.

That being said now I am able to leave her home with Grandma (or have grandma come with me) for all our appointments now (soo incredibly lucky).  It makes things so much easier.

  • I didnt, but I also work full time so my kids go to day care. I usually made my appointments for when DS1 was in day care. But if I couldnt do it, I would make sure DH or a friend could watch him. There is no way he would sit in a stroller!!

But, there were a lot of Moms who did bring kids with them. I think it is ok to do so.

  • I do. I try to schedule lunch or evening appointments so DH can be there, but if not we make it work. I don't care how many horrified looks I get from moms-to-be in the waiting room, if DD is with me solo we usually stop at McD's (HORROR!!!!) for french fries. It's not healthy but it keeps her quiet.

The only appointments I will NOT take her solo to is to the u/s- I'm just too confined to deal with her.

  • I brought him when I had to. DH is gone for work for 3 wks, so I tried to schedule them when he was home to watch DS, but it happened a lot that I had no one to watch him. I would bring my stroller, and give him snacks when the doctor came in. He is terrified of doctors so it got bad once he hit 15 months. He hated me sitting on the paper on the table, would scream when anyone touched me....it was embaressing...BUT my OB is great and said it didnt bother her to have him there.

I would leave him with a friend when I could since she lives right near the doctors office. It was rough at times, but we made it through the appts =)

  • My saughter is very content sitting in a stroller.  So, I would bring her to every appointment, unless there was a scan scheduled.

My OB does not allow children in the u/s room unless there is another adult there.

  • yes, I bring C.  I don't even bother w/ the stroller b/c he'd never sit in there (he likes the stroller only when it's moving).  he usually just pushes his trucks around the waiting room and rearranges furniture while we are in the exam room haha.  the only time I have a problem is the room where I get my weight and BP checked....he keeps running water out of the water cooler!  luckily, we aren't in that room very long and the staff is  very nice/understanding/helpful!

when I get near the end and have internal exams, I plan on just making early morning appts and DH will have to go into work late.  I wouldn't be comfortable not being able to just jump up and grab C if need be.

  • DS only came to one appointment when my husband was there. Otherwise I left him at his great-grandma's house which was right around the corner from the doctor's office. Since my midwives were part of a family clinic, it is the same place that DS has his check-ups and shots. Once we enter the building he starts getting upset, so taking him wasn't an option.

  • Yup, every time!  My husband doesn't come to any except the 20w ultrasound - I'd rather use the vacation time after the baby is here.

Mainly, I schedule it an hour in to nap time, typically 1:30ish.  Then, I get in the car an hour early, typically just drive around, grab some drive thru lunch (he'll eat cold nuggets) and then move him to the stroller for the appt.  He'll typically stay asleep.  I always come prepared though, milk cup, juice cup, and cheerios snack cup.  Toy trains in the side pocket of the stroller.  If he does wake up by chance, he's entertained.

He had to come with for my internal u/s - same deal, but I also brought cereal bars with :)

  • Yes, I brought DS #1 with me to all of my appointments (and I went to the dr 2x a week because I was high risk).  I kept him in his stroller and brought a portable DVD player.  I let him watch Elmo's World while I had my NST's and exams.  It kept him quiet and occupied... I am not a huge fan of letting him watch TV all the time but sometimes you do what you have to do!
  • Yes, she's been to almost all of mine. I did the stroller thing at first but now she's used to the office and sits pretty well in a chair. I bring plenty of snacks and books. She loves the office staff now and usually behaves just fine. The doctor lets her listen to the doppler and "help" measure my belly. I am taking advantage of a friend's offer to watch her for most of my internals coming up. I thought that would be easier than being half naked in case she got into something. Oh and duh, I schedule all my appts in mid/late morning - definitely avoid naptime.
  • I never did, I always let her go to my mom's house for some fun with grandma.  Sometimes, my ob's office would be running way behind, like an hour or more.
  • Yes, but I make appoinments around DH's schedule so that he is always there too. He went to every single appt. with DD#1, so I think he would feel bad missing out on the appts. with DD#2. We do it all as a family, which we get some strange looks at the OB sometimes, but whatever. We don't have family in the immediate area, so leaving DD with someone during the appointments is not an option.
