Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Am I bad for letting LO initially fall asleep in the swing?

So, for the past 2 weeks I've been letting LO fall asleep in the swing around 9p.m. while I watch tv or read. I go to bed & she wakes me up to eat around 3:30 to 4:30a.m . (Hubby has been out of country for work for 1 month, coming home for Christmas).

Is it wrong to let her sleep in the swing for so long? She seems just fine, but I'm sure this sleep routine is not recommended by Parenting magazine, or the American Academy of Pediatrics!!!

I'm just interested in your opinions...good or bad.

Me: 42, DH: 43. We are so grateful to have a 2yr old daughter, conceived naturally after 3 miscarriages & no treatments (our Dr. gave us 1 more month to try on our own before advacing to IVF, & we conceived her naturally in January 2010)! Trying since April 2011 without sucess....MD said we were both "fine" & that if it wasn't happening, it was a chromosomal issue. Finally started Follistim 225mcg injections with an Ovidrel trigger November 2012. Bleeding 11 days post Ovidrel on November 25th. Starting the whole lab/Ultrasound/Follistim cycle again on November 27th...

Re: Am I bad for letting LO initially fall asleep in the swing?

  • I'm sure someone will flame on this... But I think wherever LO falls asleep is fine to let them sleep (obviously as long as its a safe place!) But DD slept in her swing the 1st week and 1/2 she was home.. She wouldn't sleep in the bassinet and the little lamb was the only place she would knock out... =)

  • I have no idea how old your LO is, but it sounds like you have a good thing going. I say anything goes the first 4 months. Good luck! I can't imagine my dh being gone for a month.
  • There were a lot of times that I had to put my DS in the swing to get him to fall asleep when I wanted to put him down for the night.  Once I thought he was in a deeper sleep I would move him to his crib.  Sometimes he would wake up as I was putting him down (so he would go back to the swing) and other times he would stay asleep. Then when he would wake in the middle of the night for a feeding I would have to put him back in the swing to get him back to sleep and he would stay there for the rest of the night and I would sleep on the couch (swing is in the living room).  He is now 8 weeks and I don't have to put him in the swing to get him to sleep initially but the odd time he still ends up in the swing in the early morning so I can get a bit more sleep but this is starting to get rare. I think now that he is getting older and staying awake more during the day he is more tired at night so he falls asleep better.  So I would say whatever works for you.  I have read on here before that many babies sleep in different places other than a crib as long as it is safe.

  • My babe sleeps the first part of her night in the swing. I don't think it's a terrible thing. I'd prefer her to sleep with me or in her bassinet but if that's what gets her to sleep, then so be it. I'll take what I can get and I see no potential danger in it, so why not? We'll start working her out of it when she gets a bit older and is actually able to learn to self soothe!
  • Mason slept in his swing off and on until he was too big for it. When he got sick it was a serious lifesaver. Durng ear infections or colds it's almost impossible to get LO to sleep flat, swings and bouncy seats are lifesavers. I'm dreading his next cold because we don't have that option anymore.
  • Sounds fine to me!

  • No flames here. You have to do what works for your family. We let him fall asleep in the swing when he won't settle anywhere else (crib, Rock'N'Play) and move him when he wakes for a feeding.
  • My LO slept in her swing almost every night from 2 weeks until last week(7 weeks) when we moved her to her cradle. She had to be elevated due to AR and that is the only place she would sleep.I believe you do what you need to in order for you and your LO to get sleep. Like everyone else said as long as its a safe place. Go for it!

  • As long as baby is safe, do what you gotta do. When my niece is sick with a cold, my SIL puts her in the swing to sleep because it helps her breathe better. And my LO takes her morning nap in the swing every day (2 hours or so). It's a lifesaver, because it's in the living room so I don't have to keep going in to her room to check on her as I go about my day.
I guess technically now I should be SecondBabyMomma Lilypie Third Birthday tickers Lilypie First Birthday tickers
  • My LO has pretty much slept in her swing at night since she was 4 days old, if she isn't sleeping in her swing she is sleeping in my arms.

  • no youre not bad. im a firm believer that you and your baby both need sleep - so if thats where your LO is comfortable so be it. my LO will not lay flat (probably due to reflux) and i spent many nights walking around holding her. everytime i put her down she cried - so neither of us were sleeping. my LO sleeps in a carseat every night! so if youre bad - so am i!
  • I let Baby Girl sleep in her bouncer.  It vibrates and she likes it and STTN.  So I say you're good!
  • I love it that your LO sleeps in the car seat!  I actually feel so much more comfortable that my LO's head is elevated in the swing, just in case she spits up. She's 12 weeks old this week and at the moment she's sound asleep in the swing again & we're watching a movie.  :)
