Babies: 9 - 12 Months

When are you switching to a front facing seat?

I think every week I read something different about what safety experts are recommending for car seats.  The original word was that it was safe to go FF when baby was 20 lbs or 1 year old, whichever came last.  Now I'm reading that you should wait until the 2nd year.

What are all of you mommies doing?  DS is 22 lbs and will be a year old in less than two weeks.  I would love to turn to FF so I could see him in the mirror but I also want to make the safest decision.

Re: When are you switching to a front facing seat?

  • We are keeping him RF as long as possible. The seat we chose goes up to 40 lbs RF - so until he is 40 lbs - he will stay RF unless his legs get in the way of the seat first.

  • Its actually 1yr AND 20 lbs. Waiting til 2years is 75% safer.

  • DS is already sitting cross-legged RF... We'll see if we can make it a bit past 1 year but I dunno.
  • Yeah its not OR its 1 year AND 20 lbs... at the rate Isaiah is growing we will be switching once he is 20 lbs since he will be over a year for sure

  • After a year AND twenty lbs, its a personal decision(and hopefully an informed one =).  I waited until 2 years old with DS#1 and will do the same with DS#.  It just felt like the right time.  Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

  • Based on the research we've done and at the advice of our pedi we're keeping him RF as long as possible.

To be honest, once you watch these videos (scroll down) it should be a no brainer.

Yes I understand it's 1 & 20.  I said in my OP "whichever came last" meaning that if the baby is 1 yr you would still wait until the 20lb mark was reached.  Sorry for the confusion.  DS's legs are already getting a little squished and he's in the convertible seat so I think we're gonna end up going FF before I would like.

  • We are keeping DS RF for as long as possible. We bought a Britax that is RF until 35lbs, DS is only 16lbs now so I doubt he will be 35lbs at 3 years old.
  • I have a mirror that attaches to the back seat and I can see DD just fine. It's actually easy to put her in the car RF. I plan to RF first till she is 20 lbs and 1 yrs old and then as long as she is comfortable I will have her RF.
  • When she reaches the requirement of 1 year and 20 pounds she's going forward.  I haven't had her weighed recently, but at 8 months she was just shy of 17 pounds, so I'm thinking that she should be close by 1, if not there already.  We'll see.

  • we're rear-facing until 35 lbs (which is the limit for our seat) Bean has a mirror that I watch him in. He looks out the windows and has a generally good time.  I'm not worried about his entertainment regarding his carseat placement.

  • We have DS in a covertible seat already, facing rear - we intend to keep him that way for a good while.  I suspect until 2 years of age.

  • DD is 21 lbs now, and she is quite tall, I am hoping she will fit in her baby seat until the 1 year mark!
  • We will rear face until at least 2, maybe longer as I'm sure my little peanut won't hit the RFing weight limit for a looong time.I'd rather she be safe and a little squished for legroom than the alternative if we were in an accident.

  • #1 stayed RF until 28 months. I only switched her because she out grew the height restrictions for our refacing seat. Other wise she would have stayed RF. I will do the same with #2 and #3
  • sometime in the next week--probably after friday's payday when i can get a booster seat for my 4 year old.   i just don't think if makes a huge difference.   ready to move out of the infant seat (which i found someone to take it)   and my daughter is ready to move up so the timing is right.
  • Z is still snug and comfy rear facing in his infact carrier at almost 20lbs. We plan to move him to a RF convertable seat at 1 year. We have yet to choose one. He will then be in that one for as long as he is comfortable. I'm hoping he goes to the full 2 years. I'm afraid that his legs may get in the way too much at some point.

  • We plan on RF as long as our seat allows us...we have the Britax Boulevard 70 and it RF to 40 pounds.
