I've been trying out our PFs and Thirsties Duo Wraps lately. Everytime H poops, it leaks onto the inner white trim of the leg holes. Am I doing something wrong? I think the diaper cover is snug enough. Or is H just an explosive pooper? I may need to get more diaper covers. TIA!
Re: Christine & other PF Mamas
it's not uncommon for the poop to get on the inside of the gussets but you should not have any leaking outside of the diapers. the covers should contain the messes!
he may be a more explosive pooper than some but i do remember that we had a fair # of poops get on the gussets too. but, since i was doing diaper laundry every other day when she was younger we were ok w/covers (i had 7)...and if we were ever short i'd just wash and hang dry and in an hour or two it was dry and ready to use again.
what fold are you using? i use the angel wing fold now b/c it's faster with a baby that threatens to roll off the changing table...but when she was younger i'd do the jelly roll fold and i think that is better for containing messes
i also think you need to pull the diaper really tight before attaching the snappi b/c inevitably your diaper always loosens once you let go. HTH!

As far as the poop getting on the cover, are you BF? If so, BF babies tend to have looser poop them FF babies so for us (since we EBF) we go a lot of poo on the covers but had NO poo leaks onto her clothes. I'd rinse the cover right away and if it didn't come out with rinsing and hand washing then I'd use a little spray and wash (or something similar) on the gussets. If it did come out with handwashing then I'd let it air dry so I could use it later if I needed to. The cover always contained the mess. I had 4 covers and wish I would've had more. However, I did make do with what I had by handwashing and airdrying. It wasn't the perfect situation but it worked. I plan on using her 4 covers and then getting 4 more for the next baby. I don't use the duo's, only the sized covers. I've found the duos to be very bulky on Bella since she's so slender, the sized covers tend to get a better fit. The duos seem to have gaps for us and I'm not confident they'd contain leaks, she's a decent wetter.
Also Jaime's right, make the diaper a little tighter than you think you should because it will loosen.
We've always used the angel wing fold... now I need something even faster than that! She's a mover and a shaker on the changing table! I've thought about just folding it into 3rds and not using a snappi... I wonder if people do this? Her poop is pretty solid/formed most of the time so do you think that would work?
haha this made me smile
yes, I know that once the poop becomes more solid, a lot of PF mamas will just fold it into thirds and lay it inside the cover....

Ditto what Jaime and Sarah said. I'm pretty sure I emailed one or both of them regarding the same exact thing! We always had poop getting on the cover. I just had several covers so we could switch it when it got dirty.
And, yes, you need to update your blog! Or update us on how things are going. We'll be in Hawaii again in a couple months so hopefully we can have another bumpie gtg with all the bebes!
We had many fewer spills into to Thirsties once I mastered the really tight diaper seal.
I lay the diaper flat, put him on it, pull the front half over him, then pull the back sides up like a regular diaper. I stretch the snappi on quickly, just to get it on, then I go back and tug up any excess fabric around each leg and reattach the snappi, one side at a time, making sure there's no space between his body and the diaper. (You might not think there's much loose fabric, but often there is if you check!) It's very rare that I ever get it on tight enough with just one try. Once you get the hang of it, it's super quick and easy. Most importantly, it gives a really tight fit and prevents most poop from escaping. GL!
We have that same issue...it used to bother me but I soon got over it...I figured, at least it's contained on the INSIDE and not making it's way onto her clothes. I know many mamas aim to maintain their stash in pristine condition and I do my best, but we have staining, velcros that's ended up on the PUL rather than the tabs, etc. and well...our stuff looks used. But I am okay with that...I mean, your everyday underwear never quite looks the same as the day as you bought it, right?
So...I treat the covers with a little OxyClean or Grandma's Soap, especially on the white elastic by the gusset and keep them as clean as possible, but yeah, after daily use for nearly a year, they're looking a bit worn and dingy.
BTW, now that Libby is mobile...when she poops it ALWAYS gets on the inside of the cover...every.single.time. But again, the ONLY time we ever had poop make it out of the her diaper onto her clothing was last month when we were in Vegas and used Huggies. We've never had an issue with our CDs.

This is what DH and I used to do. DH does a better job than me though. We'd always have leaks if I am the one putting on the CD. This is also the reason why we switched to BG 4.0s. Made life much easier for us :-).
Ditto! Our stuff looks well used. I'm probably even going to have to buy new PFs for the next one since my not-often-enough washing has caused some to start deteriorating recently. Oh well, those are cheap and it still saves big $ in the long run!
Thanks for the replies, everyone! At first, i wasn't using a snappi. I was just folding into thirds and placing in the diaper cover. After reading some of your replies, I tried the angel fold with snappi. I had about the same leakage as no snappi. Now I'm just doing an angel fold without snappi (for less bulk on his backside). Nothing is leaking outside of the inner leg gussets so that's good.
I'm still amazed at how effective sun bleaching is! I wish we had a clothesline, though. We're technically not supposed to have one due to HOA rules at our townhouse complex so I've been thinking about how to do one that's not permanent or doesn't require us to affix anything to any structures (like those retractable ones). For now, I'm using clothes hangers and hanging them from our storage closet doorknob.
