1st Trimester

Ugh I shouldn't have vacuumed

We just found out we were 7 weeks pregnant a few days ago and I decided it would be a good idea to vacuum my sons rug in his room. Now I'm crampy. I laid down for 2 hours and its definitely getting better but I'm still paranoid. Before my son I had one miscarriage so I know what that loss feels like. I'd hate myself if I did something to hurt the baby. :(

Anyone else ever do something like that and everything turn out ok?

  • Unless your doctor has specifically told you to absolutely not exert yourself in the slightest, vacuuming shouldn't cause you to m/c.

I know you're just scared and paranoid, but realize that there's women on these boards who run marathons while pregnant and everything turns out beautifully.

  • Just because your pregnant does not mean you need to stop doing household chores.... unless your vacuum is like 100 pounds..  Indifferent
  • I've felt that way with my last pregnancy. Not that I was going to miscarry, but that I over did it (I had swept and washed the floor). If you feel like you're over doing it, just take a rest :) I am sure everything is fine!

  • I never said I was going to stop doing chores...not sure where you read that. I'm saying I over exerted myself while vacuuming the rug and now I have cramps. You could do too much while being pregnant. And with the experience of a miscarriage before I really don't want to risk this baby by doing too much. All I was looking for were some positive thoughts. I'm not a lazy person and I'm going through this first trimester taking care of a house and an 8 month old baby...not trying to get out of cleaning. But thanks for that.

  • The last few days I've noticed some cramping when I'm more active, and I'm ok - heard the heartbeat on doppler at the dr.'s office this afternoon! :)  I think you're ok as long as you don't have any heavy bleeding.

I don't think they were suggesting that you thought you should stop doing chores. They were telling you that vacuuming cannot cause a miscarriage. Cramping is normal.

If, God forbid, anything were to happen, it would be something completely unrelated to the vacuuming.

    This.  Thank you.

If you feel like you're over working yourself, please do take a little break.  But you can still be active and be pregnant.  I've experienced a loss too.. and vacuuming, exercising, etc, whatever, won't cause it.  If it's going to happen, it will happen.

Cramps are fairly normal, though.  I still have cramps from time to time.  As long as you're not bleeding, and as long as the cramps stop after a while.. you should be fine.

This and this again! Don't worry about vacuuming and normal daily activities. They're all fine. I milk cows and throw hay for a living and it's been a non-issue. Please don't worry about vaccuming. Although, I can see where some things cause cramping/over exertion more. I never liked the riding mower at the end of my last pregnancy. It hurt every time!

  • No offense but I have a physical job and work around our farm all the time.  My doctor basically said women have been birthing babies for centuries and what do you think women did in old times.  If you do something like that on a daily or regular basis then there is nothing to worry about...

We live our lives being pregnant does not mean you sit around all day and do nothing... (sorry if this sounds snarky) however you do what you have to do...

BFP #1 04/05/10 EDD 12/11/10 Missed M/C 7w found out at 12w5d You're so missed LO BFP #2 11/27/10 EDD 08/07/11.. Diagnosed with IC 03/17/11 Cerclage put in place 03/21/11 Madilynn Mae born 7/26/11
  • LOL! Right now I'm sitting around all day doing nothing. But only because whenever I stand up it's followed closely by running to the bathroom to throw up. I have my first appt. today and I'm going to see if they will write me a script for it. The cramping does suck though, but everything I read says it's fine as long as it's not followed by bleeding. But like others said, if you feel like you over did it, just sit down and chill for a while, sounds like you did. You're doing the right thing. Whenever something doesn't feel right, do what does feel right.
